    • A benefit for 5-year-old Jack Nall, son of Rob and Laura Nall, will be held at Friendship Manor Nursing Home, which is seeking donations of baked goods and craft items to sell and/or cash donations for the Nall family.

  • Though the sound of the horses’ hooves and stagecoach wheels turning have faded long ago into our heritage and history, the stories and memories handed down through the ages have preserved at least a glimpse into those days.

    A card shower is being requested for Geraldine Mosley Hipsher, who will celebrate her birthday on Sept. 2.

  • Kayla Michelle Kern and Ryan Lee Ochs, both of Vandalia, have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

  • Jennifer Beausang and Wesley Hoffman, both of Collinsville, have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.
    The future bride is the daughter of John and Jean Beausang of Collinsville.
    She graduated from Collinsville High School in 1999, and graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, with a concentration on photojournalism.
    She is currently the manager of the Avalon Exchange store in the Delmar/University City loop in St. Louis.

  • Vandalia native Michael Ehrat has been named chief executive officer of Mainland Medical Center in Texas City, Texas.

  • More than 2,500 4-H exhibits from across the state were evaluated and displayed during the Illinois State Fair, and Fayette County 4-H’ers were part of that exhibition, with 14 members making the long trip to Springfield on Monday, Aug. 13, to have their project work evaluated. They earned the right by being selected in the top of their divisions at the Fayette County 4-H Show June 29-30 in Brownstown.

  • Donald “Jake” and Georgianne (Edwards) Tompkins of Smithboro will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 15.

  • Edward and Doris Helm of Vandalia will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Sept. 7.


    Ed Helm and the former Doris Isbell were married at her parents’ home in Vandalia on Sept. 7, 1947.
    They are the parents of a daughter, Jan and her husband Pete Manuel of Marshall.
    They also have one grandson, Chris and wife Kim of Covington, Ga., and two great-granddaughters.

    Sounds are important. Sunday night, the gentle sound of rain falling was a wonderful thing. Listening for the stir of a baby during the night is another. The sound of beautiful music is always refreshing.
    Such was the case on Monday as SoftFire began playing. David and Patricia Pence (known as SoftFire) have an assortment of musical instruments, and are also talented vocally. One of their early numbers was “What a Mighty God We Serve.”
