    Wednesday, Jan. 11
    • The U of I Extension will host a workshop, “Finding Your Get Up and Go,” at 1:30 p.m. at the Effingham Extension office. There is no fee, but those interested need to pre-register by calling 217-347-7773. The workshop will introduce strategies for getting motivated and taking action and will cover optimism, attitude, social involvement and positive outlook.

  • 'Not A Fan' series to start at Liberty

    This Sunday, Liberty Christian Church in rural Brownstown will begin a new six-week sermon series titled "Not A Fan."
    The series will explore Jesus's invitation to follow him – not to just be a "fan," but to be a completely committed follower.
    The series will include small-group Bible studies.

    Holy Cross to study 'Batman' movie

    Pam Childers played good, old-time tunes Monday as the Evergreen Outreach guests assembled. She played "I’m Lookin’ Over a Four-Leaf Clover," "Jeepers Creepers (Where’d You Get Those Peepers)", "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," "My Ragtime Gal," "And the Band Played On," "Clementine," "Bicycle Built for Two," "I’ve Been Working on the Railroad" and "Auld Lang Syne," so appropriate for the second day of the new year.

  • Over the years, I have received many Christmas cards. They are beautiful, and I hold onto them for a while before I let them go.

  • Thursday, Jan. 5 – Beef stew, lettuce salad, cherry crisp and biscuit.
    Friday, Jan. 6 – Barbecue ribbettes on bun, succotash, rosemary potatoes, and strawberries and  bananas.
    Monday, Jan. 9 – Pepper steak w/oriental vegetables, rice, butter beans, fruit for salad and whole wheat bread.
    Tuesday, Jan. 10 – Barbecue chicken, baked potato, mixed vegetables, plums, cookie and whole grain bread.  
    Wednesday, Jan. 11 – Meatloaf, au gratin potatoes, gourmet carrots, apple fruit crisp and whole wheat bread.

  • Lyndsay Evans and Anthony Lach have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

  • Patricia Farris (left), executive director of the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center, accepts a donation from the chairwoman of the HCE Vandalia Day Unit, Debbie Segrest, and a member of that unit, Carrie Hill.

    The HCE members voted to each make a $5 donation in lieu of a Christmas gift exchange.

  • A reception for Mr. and Mrs. Charles Forbes, who were united in marriage on Nov. 26 in Glenview, will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, at Bethel Baptist Church, which is located on Ill. Route 185 northwest of Vandalia.
    In lieu of gifts, the couple is requesting donations to the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center in Vandalia.

  • Carol Ann Reuscher of Vandalia and Kyle McCollum of Charleston were united in marriage in a ceremony at 2 p.m. on July 9, 2011, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Peter Kolb officiating.
