    David and Patricia Pence, known as SoftFire, provided the entertainment at Evergreen Outreach on Monday. The Pences have amazing musical talent – singing and playing several instruments – and they do make “a joyful noise unto the Lord” when they entertain. Coming with them were their four border collie dogs.

  • I have a couple of friends who give me books. They only ask that after I am finished with the copy, I pass it on as a gift to someone else who enjoys reading.

  • National Pet Week

    The Scent of an Unwelcome Guest…
    …was detected in the early morning hours on the Homestead, unmistakably that of brother or sister skunk (on the polecat side of the family).
    While it didn’t hold the full-bloom odor of a disturbed critter, it certainly couldn’t be classified as an “aroma,” and it was strong enough to have served as the skunk’s personal calling card.

  • Weekend Trip
    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter spent the weekend with Mitch and Gretchen Harpster of Cape Girardeau, Mo.
    On Saturday evening, Ben, Amanda, Madison and Dru Eller of Jackson, Mo., joined them for dinner.
    The majority of the weekend was spent spoiling the newest addition to the family – 3-week-old Owen.
    St. Peter Church
    Saturday evening worship attendance was 137. Sunday morning worship attendance was 94.
    The organist on Sunday was the Rev. Alan Holtz.
    Acolyte was Tresston Bahde.

    • Items for Boy Scout Troop #444 garage sale can be taken to the Phillips Building from 6-8 p.m. To help start the new troop, donations are needed, and anything will be taken.     Marie Benefiel will celebrate her 94th birthday at 11:30 a.m. next Tuesday at the House of Plenty restaurant in Highland.
    There is an open invitation for the celebration.

  • Alexandria Laine Conant
    Scott and Alison Conant of Effingham are the parents of a girl born at 3:39 p.m. on March 28, 2012, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
    She weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 21 inches long. She was named Alexandria Laine.
    Grandparents are Mikel Jahraus of Farina, Diane Jahraus of Altamont, and Gary and Janet Conant of Alma.

  • Holly Childers of Vandalia and Aaron Newcom of Wood River have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

  • Leslie and Daisy Hipsher of Brownstown are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
