  • A visit to the Fayette County Fair-grounds Saturday afternoon found that, although the temperature was in the three-digit range, area 4-H kids were braving the heat to participate in the rabbit competitions.

    The 57th annual Doyle-Lawler Reunion was held Sunday, June 24, at the Blue Mound Civic Center near Decatur.

  • Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 in Vandalia honored four long-time members this spring.

    Those honored included 60-year members Lester Arnold (left) and David Crye (center). Post 95 Commander John Blythe (right) presented the awards. Not present were 60-year member Wendell L. Hoffman and 50-year member Louie Warner.

  • Lacey Durbin and Jacob Nalley, both of Vandalia, have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

  • Allison Jo Brunk and Sheldon Sean Satterthwaite Jr., both of Brownstown, have announced their upcoming marriage.

  • Clarence and Mary Alender of Gillespie, formerly of Vandalia, celebrated their 60th anniversary this week with family dinners on Sunday and Wednesday.

  • Farina patriotic gospel concert Saturday

    A patriotic gospel concert will be held in the Farina City Park this Saturday in conjunction with the Independence Day celebration there.
    The concert, hosted by John and Judy Roberts, will include the FourGiven Quartet of Vandalia and the Shepherdsmen Quartet from Woodlawn.
    The concert will begin at 4:30 and conclude at 6:30 p.m. on the stage in the Farina park.
    Those attending the concert are asked to bring lawn chairs to sit on during the concert.

    The Homestead Critters are tolerating the heat and dry weather. Several have asked about the critters, since it has been so hot. Papa Bear Bill has been keeping them supplied with fresh water, and they all have shade and/or shelter.
    •  Betsy LongHorn, the Bartels girl (namely Geneva), and the three youngsters, surprise us, as they do not take advantage of their shade trees.
    They seem to like to lie in the sunshine, even in the 100-plus degree weather.

  • Attend Birthday Party
    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter attended the fifth birthday party of their grandson, Dru Eller of Jackson, Mo., on Saturday.
    Those attending were: Ron and Diane Eller of Salem, Anna Lou Eller of Salem, Heidi Hunter and Bruce of Fruitland, Carolyn Stein of Salem, Natalie Stein of Cape Girardeau, Mitch, Gretchen and Owen Harpster of Cape Girardeau, and Doug and Pam Stein of St. Peter.
    Attend Baptism
    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter attended the baptism of grandson, Owen Harpster of Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Sunday.
