  • Critters Wiser Than Some of Us? (Just Musing)             
    Although shorts and flip-flops on bare feet were seen this past weekend on humans, we notice the critters are still wearing their fuzzy, winter coats. Thus, when the strong, cold winter winds blew in snow over the weekend, the critters did not have to hurriedly pull on warmer coats, socks and shoes.

    • A telenet lesson, “Going Green,” will be given at the Fayette County Extension Office, Vandalia, at 10 a.m. This is for Home and Community Education Units, and the public is welcome to attend.
    • The Lunch Bunch will meet at noon at Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
    • The St. Elmo Library District Board will not meet until Tuesday, March 13.
    • The Fayette County livestock meeting, 7 p.m., Vandalia Extension Office.

  • Courtney Taylor, youth leader at the Northside Christian Church, will be the speaker at the third Lenten Luncheon next Wednesday at the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Vandalia.

  • Ethyn James Wright
    Trevor and Tara Wright of Beecher City are the parents of a boy born at 12:54 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.

  • On Sunday, Jan. 29, several family members and friends joined together at the Loudon Town Hall in rural Beecher City to celebrate three big milestone birthdays and others.
    The honored guests were: MaryBelle Ledbetter of Brownstown, celebrating her 90th birthday; Carrie Dodson of St. Elmo, celebrating her 80th birthday; and Cora Miley of rural Beecher City, celebrating her 75th birthday. Both Carrie and Cora are nieces of MaryBelle.

  • Sausage, pancake supper March 8

    The annual sausage and pancake supper, sponsored by the Methodist Men of First United Methodist Church of Vandalia, will be held next Thursday, March 8, from 4-7 p.m. in Wesley Hall.
    Donations are appreciated, and funds raised will be used to support UMM projects.
    Parking is available in the back of the church.

    As people were entering Evergreen Outreach on Monday, SoftFire was playing Stevie Wonder’s “I Just Called to Say I Love You.” Other foot-tapping melodies, such as “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” and  “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High,” also were played.
    David and Patricia Pence, known as SoftFire, provided the entertainment for the day. They brought their beautiful border collies with them – Daniel, John, Rufus and Gracie.

    Jeff and Kelly Schaal of Des Peres, Mo., are the parents of a boy born at 3:48 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

  • Earl Hovious
    A card shower is planned for Earl Hovious of Brownstown, who will be celebrating his 90th birthday on March 3.
