    Everyone is invited to participate in this educational workshop at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Sunday, Oct.  21, at 7 p.m., in the Augsburg Church fellowship hall.

  • Smoky (the adorable) Little Donkey…
    … either has ESP or ESH (extraordinarily sharp hearing).
    We have noticed this happening in times past and marvel at his ability to know when Bill is pouring and/or sitting down with his morning cup of coffee.
    Bill had just poured his coffee this morning and started to sit down (at 5:15 am) when Smoky brayed his musical “Good Morning,” a reminder to Bill that he and his stable-mates hadn’t had their breakfast yet.

    Thursday, September 20
    • The Vit-Em-In Sunday school class of First United Methodist Church will have a wiener roast at the rural home of Jack and Marilyn Sproat at 5 p.m., with LeMar and Billye Jo Marchman co-hosts. Hot dogs, buns, beverages and table service will be provided for the potluck meal.  

  • Jeff Bradley became a member of the Boy Scouts of America 11 years ago. He is 17 now, a senior at Vandalia Community High School and an Eagle Scout.
    Bradley has earned the required 21 merit badges, and for his Eagle project, he provided a new sign for the Brownstown VFW Post 9770.

  • The ExxonMobil Annuitants Club met on Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia for its monthly meeting and luncheon.
    The pledge of allegiance was followed by the meal blessing by Brock Fisher.
    After the meal was finished, President Dean Black opened the meeting and welcomed the guests.
    The secretary and treasurer report were read and approved.
    Birthdays and anniversaries for August were read.  It was stated that Ed and Doris Helm were celebrating their 65th anniversary on Sept. 7.

  • Russell Hewitt
    An open house is being planned for Russell Hewitt in honor of his 91st birthday.
    The reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. this Saturday at Brookstone Estates on West Fillmore Street in Vandalia.
    Family and friends are invited to the reception. The family requests that no gifts be given.
    A card shower is also being requested for Hewitt, who was born on Sept. 12, 1921, in Danville. Cards may be sent to 1607 W. Fillmore St., Vandalia, Ill. 62471.

  • Capt. Adam W. Cole and Krista S. Kukowski have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

    The future groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred D. Cole of Vandalia.
    He is a 2001 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, earned his undergraduate degree in history from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in diplomacy from Norwich University.
    He is a captain in the Illinois Army National Guard, serving as the commander of C Co. in Litchfield. He works at Camp Lincoln in Springfield.

  • Kari Jo McCarty and Aaron Nathan Boerema have announced their engagement.
    The future bride is the daughter of Ed and Kathy McCarty of Vandalia.
