  • The St. Elmo High School class of 1954 met for lunch at Good Old Days Banquet Hall on Saturday, May 24, for its 60-year class reunion.

  • Attend Birthday Party
    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter, traveled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to attend the seventh birthday party of grandson Dru Eller on Saturday.
    They spent the weekend at the home of Mitch, Gretchen, Owen and Aaron Harpster of Cape Girardeau.
    Mahala Jacquin of Villa Ridge, Mo., also joined them.

    Keri, Elijah, and Emma Latin of Chase, Mich., spent the weekend with her parents, Larry and Sue Urban of St. Peter.

  • Critters Tolerating Heat Well
    The last few days have been hot and steamy, but all of the critters seem to be doing fine. The outside ones (Katie, the doggie and Betsy and her Long Horn family) don’t seem to be acting any different. They are hitting the waterin’ hole (tank) fairly often, but we keep the water flowing in the tank regularly, so, no problem.
    The Longhorns still have the energy to run and stampede across the pasture to the fence to watch the garbage truck on the Friday morning pickups every month.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Virden celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Monday.
    Friends and family are invited to honor the couple at an open house from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at Rehoboth Baptist Church camp, located five miles north of Vandalia on U.S. Route 51 or five miles south of Ramsey.
    The former Iris Hughes, daughter of the late Marion and Marjorie Hughes of Rosamond, and Dennis Virden, son of the late Ralph and Verna Virden of Ramsey, were married on June 23, 1979, in Pana.

  • Don and Vicky Snow of Jacksonville will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary on July 20.

  • Emily Strobel and Jake Cripe have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

  • Jaxson Timothy Dale Wilkerson
    Heather Mechel Beck and Timothy Andrew Moeller of Hillsboro are the parents of a boy born at 5:31 p.m. on June 3, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital in Litchfield.
    Jaxson Timothy Dale Wilkerson weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 20 inches long.
    Maternal grandparents are Cindy and Dale Whitford of Litchfield, and Scott Beck of Vandalia. Paternal grandparents are Patrick and Rhonda Wilkerson of Muskegon, Mich., Bruce and Cheryl Richards of Carlinville, and Regina Albert of Oakford.

    The Herman Dothager family reunion will be held on Friday, July 4, in the pavilion at Rogier Park on West Fillmore Street in Vandalia.

  • Between the 1850s and 1920s, an estimated 250,000 abandoned or orphaned children were transported from Eastern cities to Midwestern, Southern and Western towns and farm communities for the purpose of giving them a better life, a life away from the dangers of street life.
    They were given one-way tickets and put on a train.
