    Evergreen Outreach was held amid the pelting rain on Monday. Volunteers ran into Wesley Hall as the guests were unloaded from their buses under the shelter of the church's awning.
    Inside, the musical talent of Betty Stolte was filling the hall. “This is the Day That the Lord has Made,” “Praise the Lord,” “Just a Closer Walk With Thee,” “As Time Goes By” and so many other toe-tapping numbers. Betty has a wonderful gift on the piano.

    Life Chain rally to be held Saturday

    A Life Chain rally will be held this Sunday from 2-3:30 p.m. at the corner of Kennedy  Boulevard and Gallatin Street in Vandalia.
    Organizers say that the rally will be a "peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life individuals standing for prayer for our nation and for an end to abortion."
    Only official Life Chain signs will be used during the event, and will be made available to participants.

  • See You at the Pole

    Students at Vandalia High School observed "See You at the Pole" day last Wednesday.

    The nationwide, student-led movement encourages students to gather around their school's flagpole and pray for their school and their community. This year's observance, led by Ryan Ambuehl, involved several students, teachers and community residents. A similar event was held at Vandalia Junior High School.

    Donna Smith, Monday's pianist at Evergreen Outreach, started the meeting with many golden oldies. They included "God Bless America," "You're a Grand Old Flag," "I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl That Married Good Old Dad," "Mocking Bird Hill" and "Bless This House."
    Volunteers Marie Sutton, Charlene Jett, Jeanne Schlicht, Jill Zimmerman and Ruth Ann Scott served cookies, ice cream and drinks.

    You can tell it’s football season, because on Monday we had to PUNT! More about that later.
    Betty Schulte played the piano as we started our meeting. We had a full 10 tables, and caught up on the past week as we had our refreshments. Cindy Hunter, our program manager for the day, set the stage for the Rev. Ernie Flowers. Let me tell you a little about him. He has two children (both around 60 years old), which, according to his own words, makes him "older than dirt." Ha!

    Archery clinic is Saturday at Bethel
     
    An archery clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church.
    The clinic, sponsored by the Nimrod Squad, includes archery games, prizes and lunch. The cost is $5 per person, and all ages are invited.
    The church is located seven miles northwest of Vandalia on Ill. Route 185.
