    OUR PLACE to show 'Left Behind'

    OUR PLACE youth center in downtown Vandalia will be showing the movie "Left Behind" this Friday evening. The hours for the event are 6:30-9 p.m., with the movie starting at 7 p.m.
    The "Left Behind" movie is based on the book by the same title. It is rated PG-13, and parents are cautioned that some material may not be appropriate for children under 13.
    Free popcorn and drinks are available. Donations are accepted.
    Our Place is located at 507 W. Gallatin St.

  • Lenten Luncheon series under way

    The annual Lenten Luncheon series kicked off this week, with the opening event being held Wednesday at First Christian Church. John Glennon, pastor of Parkview Free Methodist Church, was the speaker.
    Following is the list of locations and speakers for the upcoming weeks:
    March 23 – First Church of God; Dan Ricketts, youth minister at First Assembly of God.
    March 30 – St. James Lutheran; Al Schumacher.
    April 6 – Mother of Dolors; Don Arndt of First Baptist Church.

    There was a “hint of green” on Monday. Those attending Evergreen Outreach  enjoyed participating in the St. Patrick’s Day program. Donna Smith was at the piano, accompanied by Jerry Brugoto on his guitar, as they entertained with Irish songs.
    The Rev. Jim Fackler, assisted by Genelle Hachat, led the group in the “Welcome" and "EO” songs, as volunteers served refreshments of cookies, iced tea, water and coffee.

    We are now at the beginning of Lent. The first Sunday of Lent was on March 13.

    St. Patrick's dinner is Sunday

    The annual St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage dinner at Mother of Dolors Parish Center in Vandalia will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Sunday.
    The meal includes corned beef and cabbage, ham, hot dogs, side dishes, desserts and drinks. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children over 5, and free for children 5 and under.
    Carryouts will be available; to order, call 283-8738. All proceeds go the Right to Life programs.

  • Can the church be the church without meeting?

    Have church services become obsolete? Is coming together to worship as believers no longer relevant in today’s world?
    A few weeks ago on Rev Radio (a live call-in show hosted by the Rev. John Glennon and me on Wednesdays from 1:04 to 2 p.m. on WKRV 107.1 FM), we asked the question, “Why do people not attend church?” We received some enlightening comments and feedback from church attenders, but those who do not attend did not respond.

    The First Baptist Church of Vandalia held its first talent night of 2011 last Sunday.
    A 90-minute program of local talent of entertainment was presented to a large audience.

    Pancake and sausage supper Thursday

    The United Methodist Men group of the First United Methodist Church of Vandalia will hold its annual pancake and sausage supper this Thursday from 4-7 p.m. in Wesley Hall.
    Money raised will help support United Methodist Men projects.
    The church is located at 127 N. Fourth St. For more information, call 283-3684.
