  • Beasley is top seller of Girl Scout cookies

    The Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois’ 2010 Girl Scout Cookie Sale was deemed a tremendous success, as 10,427 girls sold 1,094,052 boxes of the cookies. And, Troop #8860’s Ellisa Beasley from Brownstown was the Top Seller for Service Unit 24.
    “I am very proud of our girls and the great job they did to make this year’s cookie sale a huge success,” said Villie M. Appoo, GSSI chief executive officer.

    Thursday, Dec. 2 – Pepper steak w/oriental vegetables over rice., fruit for salad, butter beans, whole wheat bread.
    Friday, Dec. 3 – Fried chicken, sweet potato, green beans, peaches, whole grain roll.
    Monday, Dec. 6 – Ham and beans, cole slaw, tomatoes, onions, peach pie, cornbread.
    Tuesday, Dec. 7 – Pork chop, scalloped potatoes, spinach, banana, oatmeal raisin cookie, whole wheat bread.  
    Wednesday, Dec. 8 – Roast turkey, dressing, green beans, sweet potatoes, fruit cocktail in Jello, whole grain bread.

    Sneaky Pete, the Wiley Wolf, Sighting
    We had been concerned about the lone wolf, Sneaky Pete, who visited the Homestead so long, as we hadn’t seem him for some time. We had a report a few weeks ago that someone thought they saw him, but not sure.  
    Sunday night, cousin Pauline Tackett’s border collie began barking frantically, unlike she had ever barked. Pauline then heard a loud, ferocious snarling and ran out on her back porch with flashlight.

    • Century Culture Club, 12:30 p.m., Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
    • The Avena Township Park Board will meet in the St. Elmo Community Park and probably will put up the Christmas decorations in the park and the Centennial Building.
    Thursday, Dec. 9
    • The Lunch Bunch will meet at noon at Mary Ann’s Restaurant. They will have a $10 gift exchange and the gift should be for either a man or woman.

     “She Came To a Screeching Halt”
    …were the words said by the male human of the Homestead, namely my husband, Bill. He was referring to my busy, busy lifestyle and the sudden stop caused by my episode when I slipped and fell, breaking the fibula in my left ankle.

    We were in Decatur on Saturday, having went there for a post-Thanksgiving dinner, but rather than go to a hospital emergency room there, I wanted to be taken care of by our own staff in Vandalia.

  • ExxonMobil Annuitants

    The ExxonMobil Annuitants Club met on Nov. 18 at noon for their luncheon and meeting at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia, with two guests and 21 members in attendance.
    Pledge to the flag was given, followed by the meal prayer by Brock Fisher.
    After the meal, President Dean Black called the meeting to order. Secretary/treasurer reports were given and approved.
    Birthdays and anniversaries for November were read. Reports of several members with health issues were given.
    Dues for the year 2011 were paid by several members.
