  • Lighthouse Pregnancy Center holds annual banquet

    The Lighthouse Pregnancy Center' annual fundraising banquet was held March 24 at Mother of Dolors Parish Center in Vandalia.
    The banquet was well attended, with more than 200 guests and supporters of the center.
    The featured speaker was Kathy Sparks of Granite City. Sparks shared her testimony of having once worked as a medical assistant in an abortion clinic. She now serves as executive director of Mosaic Pregnancy & Health Centers in Granite City, Belleville and Edwardsville.

  • Davis's phone call helps get Carrolls reunited

    After many years of being miles apart, a brother and his two sisters were recently reunited after a phone call made by Marie Davis of Vandalia.
    Charles Carroll, Brenda Carroll Davis and Retta Carroll Evans were reunited in West Frankfort at the home of Dean and Brenda Davis.
    On March 19, a retirement dinner was held at the Davis home to honor Brenda’s husband, Dean, who was to retire on April 1 from the Illinois Department of Corrections after 25 years.

    Sun Is Shining And Bluebells Are Up!
    …and it is officially spring (today anyway) and the computer is in the house.
    One of our official reporters, DeDe Diveley, who gives us the weekly river bottom report, reported seeing a baby red fox this week, running along as if something was after it.
    The “girls” (Anita, Blackie and Fuzzy, chickens) are really enjoying bugging, picking and scratching. They sing to us a lot and are keeping us in nice, large eggs. Sometimes there will be four in the pen. We’ve never figured that out yet.

    Birth
    Jamie and Emily Lotz of Effingham are the parents of a daughter, Aleece Marie, born on March 14, 2011. She weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces, and was 19 ½ inches long. She is welcomed home by her brothers, Andrew, age 4, and Evan, age 2. Grandparents are Larry and Bev Lotz of St. Peter, and Jim and Rosie Gibbons of Edgewood.

    The St. Peter American Legion Post #380 and the Auxiliary met on March 16 at 6:30 p.m. for their annual birthday supper.
