  • Von Kanel has articles published

    Christian author, speaker and church musician Danny R. Von Kanel has recently received word a number of his articles will be in publication over the next few months.
    Von Kanel served First Baptist Church in Vandalia from 1984-87. While at Vandalia, he was president of the Vandalia Ministerial Alliance, and the founder and director of Framework Emphasis, a year-long interdenominational youth project to bring about a spiritual awakening among Vandalia youth.

  • Legionnaires asked to support flag project

    During one of the recent meetings of Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 in Vandalia, members discussed the immediate need to replace the flags on the stage of the Legion Home.
    Members noted that age has taken its toll on the American flag and the American Legion Post 95 flag, and have learned that the total cost of replacement for the flags – and the bases, staff eagles and tassels – is approximately $890.
    Pledge cards were passed out to all members at a recent meeting, and filled-out cards were collected at the end of that meeting.

  • Birds of Prey

    Children participating in the summer reading program at Evans Public Library in Vandalia last week watched a presentation on birds of prey given by representatives of the Illinois Raptor Center in Decatur. The children saw a peregrin falcon, marlin and red-tail hawk.

  • Trees Planted at Family YMCA

    On Saturday, May 7, the YMCA planted 35 trees. The trees were donated by Rural King Supply.

  • HCE 63rd annual meeting, dinner

    The Fayette County Home and Community Education held its 63rd annual dinner and meeting on Tuesday, June 14, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia, with 44 members and five guests signing the register.

    Oklahoma Houseguests
    Curtis and Betty Dowling from Chacotah, Okla., arrived at the home of Ed and Doris Young in St. Peter early Tuesday afternoon on June 14 and left early Friday morning, June 17.

  • Reunion

    Libell
    The descendant’s of John Frank and Pearl (Leininger) Libell and his sister, Isaac Noah and Lela Ellen (Libell) Linton met on June 5 at Vandalia Park, with 43 in attendance.
    All enjoyed a day of food, family and visiting.
    Charles and Cayla (Alverson) Grandt added twin boys to the family on Jan. 5.

  • Rotary Honors Blood Drive Volunteers

    The Vandalia Rotary Club recently hosted to a lunch the volunteers who have helped at the club's quarterly blood drives for the past several years.

    Many of those volunteers are members of the American Legion Auxiliary. Pictured, from left, are Alvena Noffsinger, Linda Rhodes, Amy Meseke, George Meseke, Katie Schukar and Dolores Michel. (Not pictured is volunteer Carolyn Murray.) To the right of those volunteers are Rotary members Dale Freeman, Dr. Howard White and White's wife, Mary, who help coordinate the blood drives for the club.

    The Final three contestants have been chosen for the first annual Vandalia Idol competition, sponsored by Soroptimist of Vandalia.
