    Smoky, the (Adorable) Little Donkey…
…and his barn buddies, Lady, the mini-mare, Sugarfoot, the mini-stallion, and their daughter, Sudy, are all getting their fuzzy, winter coats.
Smoky is always so cute in the winter with his fuzzy “bangs” down his forehead and just above his eyes.
Lady and Sudy’s coats get pretty heavy, and Sugarfoot’s black coat is heavier, but he still looks pretty sleek, and with his long, long tail, he looks very handsome.

    ‘The Power of the Pen’
(or the keyboard, in this case)
“A funny thing happened on the way” out of a store in Effingham Friday. I was getting checked out at the cash register when a customer in line behind me asked if I was Panzi Blackwell. Surprised, (this was in Effingham) I said “yes.”
She said she never misses reading the column and began talking about the critters and mentioned the recent loss of Anita hen. She was very sympathetic as we discussed “the incident.”

Blackie (hen) Not Adjusting to Loss …
… of her bosom buddy, Anita hen.
Blackie is definitely in a state of deep depression. She has pulled her tail feathers out and is not laying eggs. She doesn’t sing and talk to us as she did before “THE INCIDENT.”
She is wary of coming out of her pen. (I suspect that sly fox is checking on her from time to time at night time.)
We know she is lonely. She and Anita always sat close together on their roost and stayed pretty close together when out bugging the yard.
