  • ExxonMobil Annuitants

    Twenty-six members and one guest traveled to Litchfield to Chinatown Restaurant for the monthly ExxonMobil Annuitants luncheon and meeting on Thursday, July 26.
    Following the pledge to the flag, a moment of silence was observed for Janie Appel, a member of the club who died on July 15. Dean Black gave the meal blessing.
    After the buffet, Black opened the meeting with a welcome. A guest present was Millie Brooks of Greenville.

    The Schroeder family reunion will be held this Sunday at the St. Peter American Legion Home, with a potluck dinner beginning at noon.
    All family members and friends are invited.

    The Finley family reunion will be held on Sunday, Aug. 12, with the time and place being changed.
    The reunion will be held at 1 p.m. at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia.

  • Brownstown HS class of '62 holds a reunion weekend

    The Brownstown High School class of 1962 held its 50-year class reunion on Saturday and Sunday, July 21-22.

    Critters hitting the Waterin’ Hole Hard…
    (or actually, the water tanks), as the grass gets browner, the air gets drier and hotter. The “cowgirls” – Betsy, Geneva (the Bartels girl), “Red” and the two youngsters – are really hitting the waterin’ hole frequently, keeping Papa Bear Bill busy refilling it.
    They are also already supplementing their diet with hay, as the pickin’s are just too lean in their pasture now, but they seem to be doing well.

    Out of Hospital
    Mary Harpster of St. Peter was released from St. Anthony’s hospital on Tuesday of last week.
    She is now living at Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.
    Mini-Vacation
    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter left on Thursday of last week and went to Hartville, Ohio, to the Hartville flea market.
    They also visited several flea markets and wineries in Sugarcreek, Ohio. They returned home on Sunday.

    Hospitalized
    Mary Harpster of St. Peter was taken by ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham on Wednesday of last week. She still remains a patient there.

    Visitors of Dane and Belinda Harpster this week have been: Bev Wodtka, Pastor Emrick, Larry and Sue Urban, and Helen Limes, all of St. Peter; Amanda, Madison and Dru Eller of Jackson, Mo.; and Mitch, Gretchen and Owen Harpster of Cape Girardeau, Mo.

    The 33rd biennial Rubin reunion will be held on Sunday, Aug. 5, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church Hall in St. Paul.
    A potluck dinner will begin at 12:30 p.m., with beverages, paper plates, and tableware furnished.
    Family members are asked to take lists of births, deaths and marriages since the 2010 reunion to update the family tree.
     

  • Maas plans U.S. Daughters ceremony

    Extreme heat would not have deterred Joseph Thomas from his duties in the militia during the War of 1812.  Neither did it deter descendants and members of the United States Daughters of 1812 and Illinois Society of the War of 1812 from commemorating his service.
    Jessie Maas, a member of the Kaskaskia Chapter USD1812, from Vandalia, planned the ceremony held at the Little Flock Cemetery in Flat Branch Township, Shelby County.
