  • MGHS class holds 60-year reunion

    The Mulberry Grove High School class of 1952 celebrated its 60th reunion on Friday evening, June 1, at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia.

  • 2012 Garden Oddities

    Two garden oddities were produced in two family gardens in Shobonier this summer.

    The first is a 10-pound head of cabbage grown in the garden of Devon Graumenz, a rarity given the growing conditions this summer. In her garden, Marge Warner also grew this unusual-looking tomato.
     

  • Reznick wins top honors at Effingham art show

    A Vandalia woman was a top winner in an Effingham art show.
    Lynn Reznick won the Best Overall prize for “Winter’s Coming” in the 12th annual Juried Art Show held by the Effingham Art Guild and hosted by Bonutti Clinic.
    Reznick also won the top award in the landscapes category with “Rainy Road."v
    Twenty-two local artists entered 108 pieces of art in the contest. Bonutti Clinic, located at 1303 W. Evergreen Ave. in Effingham, displays art during its regular business hours.

  • ExxonMobil Annuitants

    Twenty-six members and one guest traveled to Litchfield to Chinatown Restaurant for the monthly ExxonMobil Annuitants luncheon and meeting on Thursday, July 26.
    Following the pledge to the flag, a moment of silence was observed for Janie Appel, a member of the club who died on July 15. Dean Black gave the meal blessing.
    After the buffet, Black opened the meeting with a welcome. A guest present was Millie Brooks of Greenville.

    Schroeder
    The Schroeder family reunion will be held this Sunday at the St. Peter American Legion Home, with a potluck dinner beginning at noon.
    All family members and friends are invited.

    Finley
    The Finley family reunion will be held on Sunday, Aug. 12, with the time and place being changed.
    The reunion will be held at 1 p.m. at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia.

  • Brownstown HS class of '62 holds a reunion weekend

    The Brownstown High School class of 1962 held its 50-year class reunion on Saturday and Sunday, July 21-22.

    Critters hitting the Waterin’ Hole Hard…
    (or actually, the water tanks), as the grass gets browner, the air gets drier and hotter. The “cowgirls” – Betsy, Geneva (the Bartels girl), “Red” and the two youngsters – are really hitting the waterin’ hole frequently, keeping Papa Bear Bill busy refilling it.
    They are also already supplementing their diet with hay, as the pickin’s are just too lean in their pasture now, but they seem to be doing well.

    Out of Hospital
    Mary Harpster of St. Peter was released from St. Anthony’s hospital on Tuesday of last week.
    She is now living at Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.
    Mini-Vacation
    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter left on Thursday of last week and went to Hartville, Ohio, to the Hartville flea market.
    They also visited several flea markets and wineries in Sugarcreek, Ohio. They returned home on Sunday.
