Worthy Abe winners

In a tradition started more than 40 years ago, the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce has recognized two individuals who have gone the extra mile to help their community. And, as has been the case in past year, this year's recipients of the Abe Award have earned the recognition.
Charlie Barenfanger has served the city of Vandalia as a member of its police pension board, and Fayette County as a member of the Fayette County Hospital District Board of Directors. Those are the types of service that has been visible to others.
Behind the scenes, Barenfanger has, along with other members of his family, been a key player in the city's economic development efforts over the years. One prime example is the startup of the local rail line that has served local industries.
The other Abe Award recipient, Jerry Swarm, has served on the Vandalia City Council for more than two decades. Swarm has also worked countless hours contributing to Vandalia's tourism efforts, whether it's serving as a greeter at Vandalia Statehouse events, staffing or performing other needed duties at the National Road Interpretive Center or helping out with local festivals.
These two Abe Award recipients are perfect examples of people who give of their time to try to make things better for the community and its people, and we add our thanks and congratulations to Charlie Barenfanger and Jerry Swarm.
