When the woman who has served as Fayette County's circuit clerk for seven terms retires at the end of the day on Thursday, she doesn't know who will be serving as her temporary replacement.

But that person is expected to be on the job the next morning.

Marsha Wodtka is retiring on Thursday after 28 years as this countys circuit clerk. She announced her plans to retire in July of last year.

Fayette County Resident Circuit Judge S. Gene Schwarm is expected to sign first thing Friday morning an administrative order appointing an individual to the circuit clerks post on a temporary basis.

The likely candidate is Mary Sue Ruot, who has served as a deputy clerk under Wodtka for 28 years.

In submitting her retirement letter, Wodtka recommended that the Fayette County Board choose Ruot to serve as the circuit clerk until the general election in November.

Ruot is the Democratic candidate for circuit clerk in the general election. Nona Nonie Beckman is the Republican candidate in November.

Ruot will likely be chosen to serve as circuit clerk on an interim basis because Wodtkas replacement, by law, must be a Democrat.

Schwarm is filling the post on a temporary basis because the county board has yet to take action on the pending vacancy.

County board Chairman Steve Knebel announced at the boards July meeting that he was waiting for a recommendation from Fayette County Republican Central Committee Chairman Randy Pollard before putting a candidate before the board for a vote. The Democratic Central Committee has recommended Ruot.

The county board is expected to vote on a recommendation from Knebel at its August meeting.
