VJHS eighth-graders win big over Altamont

The Vandalia Junior High School eighth-graders continued their winning ways last Tuesday with a 44-8 win over Altamont.

The Junior Vandals scored 15 points in the first quarter, and 11 more in the second while holding Altamont to two points in each quarter.
They then outscored Altamont 17-4 in the third stanza and 2-0 in the final quarter.
Mitchell Casey, with a three-pointer and four two-pointers, and Drew Thompson, with a three-pointer, three two-point baskets and a couple of free throws, each scored 11 points to lead Vandalia.
Markus Isaiah had eight points, Case Goldsmith had six, Michael Bowles had four, and Alex Dunn had two points.

The Vandalia Junior High School eighth-grade girls closed out their regular season with victories over Pana St. Pats and Brownstown.
Bailey Stewart scored 14 points to lead the eighth-graders to a 28-17 win over St. Pats. Madyson Hill followed with eight points, Morgan Lidy had three points, and Ali Willenborg, Sophie Eckhardt and Lauren Hagy each had two points.
On Friday, the Junior Lady Vandals ended their regular season with a 16-4 record after defeating Brownstown, 28-21, with balanced scoring.
Bailey Stewart led Vandalia with eight points, followed by Madyson Hill with 6, Gracie Pruett with 5, Morgan Lindy with 3, and Ali Willenborg, Lauren Hagy and Katie Stanley with two.
The eighth-graders now enter postseason play by hosting a regional that gets under way next week. As the No. 1 seed, Vandalia will play in the second round next Thursday.

The VJHS seventh-grade girls closed out their regular season with an 18-9 win over Brownstown on Friday night.
Abby Durbin led with 6 points, Sydney Miller had 4 points, and Lexi Wehrle, Jadie Keck, Riely Ward and Madison Ferguson each had two points.
Last Thursday, the Junior Lady Vandals lost to Pana St. Pats, 33-8.
Wehrle had six points, and Durbin had two points.
The seventh-graders advanced to the second round of their regional by defeating Roxana, 17-11, in an overtime contest on Saturday.
Lexi Wehrle led Vandalia with 10 points. Abby Durbin contributed four points, Riely Ward had two points and Jadie Keck had one point.
