Seventy-nine people – including 52 classmates – gathered in Vandalia the weekend of Sept. 30-Oct. 2 to attend the 50th reunion of the Vandalia High School class of 1961.
Attendees came from California, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas.
Friday evening events were held at the Vandalia Country Club and mainly consisted of getting reacquainted. Although music from their high school years was played and gifts given for various reasons, visiting seemed to be of utmost importance.
On Saturday, the class gathered at the Vandalia Statehouse for a class picture and then stepped inside to sign the register once again.
The group toured their alma mater, Vandalia Community High School, where the new addition was of special interest.
Lunch was served at Los Amigos in the Fiesta Room. The class was joined by Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hockman, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Staff, and Iris Rademacher (former teachers and spouses).
Cindy Dickey Doehring, Carol Mills Smith, and Julia McCormick Smith surprised their classmates by singing a couple of old tunes for them. The women had sung together during their high school years.
Many class members attended the VCHS Grand Banquet at the American Legion on Saturday evening, when they enjoyed visiting with friends from other high school classes.
Larry and Sandy Peyton hosted a brunch on Sunday morning at their lakeside home. There was more visiting and lots of picture-taking.
Mickey Moore played his guitar and sang, and was joined by Phil Tedrick on the fiddle.
