Vandals will face IC Catholic
With the sectional win over Murphysboro over on Tuesday night, Vandalia returns to the state quarterfinals for the 20th time.
In the first round, at 9 a.m. at Grossinger Motors Arena (formerly U.S. Cellular Coliseum) in Bloomington, the Vandals will square off against Elmhurst (IC Catholic), a 57-21 winner over Lansing (Illiana Christian) on Tuesday at the Elmhurst Sectional.
The winner of that match is assured a trophy, with the semifinals set for 2 p.m. and the finals set for 6 p.m.
In that second round, the winner of the Vandalia/IC Catholic match will face the winner of the Belleville Althoff Catholic/Erie (Co-op) semifinal matchup.
In the latest Illinois Matmen rankings, posted on Feb. 7, Vandalia rose from No. 8 to No. 5 in Class 1A.
IC Catholic moved into the top 12 at the No. 8 spot.
Other quarterfinal matches at Bloomington on Saturday are Chicago Hope Academy/Aurora Christian and Coal City/El Paso/Gridley.
Aurora Christian, which was ranked No. 1 in Class A in the Feb. 7 Illinois Matmen poll, knocked off No. 2 Lena-Winslow. Coal City, ranked No. 3, defeated No. 4 Clinton on Tuesday.
El Paso/Gridley advanced by beating No. 8 Beardstown.
