Two Vandalia wrestlers avenged losses from the Princeton Tournament to help the Vandals earn the South Central Conference championship with a dominating 61-9 win against Roxana.
Wrestling as part of a triangular at Mascoutah last Thursday, freshman Trevor Philpot (106) and junior Ryne Lipsey (120) both earned wins against a Roxana foe who had beaten them at Princeton earlier this month.
Philpot topped Blake Whyers, 8-2, to reverse a 6-1 decision from Princeton, and Lipsey beat Jared Foiles, 3-2, after Foiles beat him, 3-1, in overtime at Princeton.
Those wins helped the Vandals (19-5, 4-0 SCC) get back on top of the conference after missing out on the title last season due to a loss to Litchfield.
Vandalia has ripped through the SCC this season, having previously beat Hillsboro, 73-6, Carlinville, 83-0, and Litchfield, 58-12.
Senior C.J. Runkel (160) earned his second pin of the season against Mason Nichols, and fellow senior Seth Purcell (170) pinned Tony Gilkey in 19 seconds for his fastest pin of the season, becoming the ninth Vandal to pin an opponent in less than 20 seconds this season and the first to 20 pins and 30 wins.
Also earning pins for the No. 6 Vandals were junior Adam Palmer (132), senior Rodney Tedrick (138), and sophomores Kolten Etcheson (220) and Kendrick Woolsey (285).
For Tedrick, he has won six straight matches, pinning four of those opponents. He’s 17-8 after starting the season at 11-8.
Vandalia picked up 10 pins against Mascoutah, getting the team to 150 on the season, during a 72-7 victory.
Senior Tyler Dagen (152) matched his fastest pin of the season by beating Julian Johnson in 18 seconds, and Lipsey (1:20) and Woolsey (1:22) also had first-period pins.
Other securing six team points were Philpot, Palmer, Tedrick, junior Dalton Blankenship (145), Runkel, Purcell and sophomore Bobby Bradley (195).
The 10 pins are the most the team has recorded in a single match this season, beating the previous high of eight against Monmouth-Roseville on Dec. 27 and Highland on Jan. 16.
During the evening, Lipsey picked up his 25th win of the season, Woolsey picked up win No. 20 and pin No. 10, and Blankenship got his 15th pin.
