Vandalia moves to 23-5 after beating four opponents at Beardstown; four wrestlers earn 30th win of season

By Andrew Harner

Going into last Saturday’s meet at Beardstown, Vandalia had wrestled against three of the top five Class A teams in the state.

With close losses in all three of those matchups, the sixth-ranked Vandals wanted to serve notice that they are capable of beating one of the top teams when it battled No. 3 PORTA in the fourth match of the day.

And serve notice they did.

The Vandals got seven pins during the match, doubling up PORTA, 48-24, in one of the biggest wins of the season.

Four Vandals picked up their 30th win of the season during the meet, which also included a 61-12 win against Pittsfield, a 66-11 win against Beardstown and a 57-23 win against West Hancock.

Junior Dalton Blankenship (145) pinned West Hancock’s Matthew Hutson in the first match of the day to pick up win No. 30. He went 41-9 last season as a sophomore, and currently stands at 33-4

In the next match, two more Vandals reached the 30-win plateau.

Senior C.J. Runkel (160) beat Wade Thiele, 17-4, and sophomore Bobby Bradley won by forfeit to reach the mark.

Runkel missed all of last season due to injury, but had more than 30 wins in his freshman and sophomore seasons, and Bradley has drastically improved his 17-18 mark from last season.

Runkel is 31-6 on the season, and Bradley is 31-7.

Junior Ryne Lipsey (120) continued his steady improvement, earning his 30th win by pinning PORTA’s Dylan Vaughn in 5:45. It’s his second time reaching 30 wins, after going 30-18 as a sophomore.

He is 30-6 this season.

Senior Seth Purcell was the first to get to 30 wins, reaching the mark last Thursday, and with four wins at Beardstown, his team-best record is 34-3.

Three more Vandals – senior Tyler Dagen (152), junior Jake Stewart (182) and sophomore Chaston Womack (113) – should give the Vandals at least nine wrestlers with 30 wins by the end of the season. Last year, just six Vandals reached the mark.

Against PORTA – which had a handful of wrestlers ranked by www.illinoismatmen.com not in the match – Vandalia took off to a 21-0 lead, and PORTA never got closer than 36-24.

At that point, the match was yet to be decided, but a pin by Blankenship in the next bout clinched the victory.

Others to get pins against PORTA were Purcell, Stewart, Bradley, Womack, Lipsey and Dagen. Sophomore Kendrick Woolsey won a 4-2 overtime decision against Wyatt Robinson, the No. 8 wrestler in the heavyweight division.

Against Pittsfield, Woolsey also had a tough matchup, losing 3-2 to No. 10 Logan Thiele.
