It was a sequence that became all-to-common during the second half of the Vandalia boys basketball team's home opener Friday night: Shot leaves East Alton-Wood River player's hand. Shot clangs off the iron. Ball winds up back the hands of an Oilers player.
And ultimately, that disturbing trend led to a frustrating 45-41 loss for the Vandals.
Overall, Vandalia finished with a 28-25 advantage on the glass. But 12 of the Oilers' 25 boards were of the offensive variety, leading to 11 second-chance points.
