Vandalia’s old city hall gets new name

Close to two months after moving most of its operations into a new home, the city has decided on a new name for its old home.

At the recommendation of Alderman Bret Brosman, the city council approved a new name for the building at 221 S. Fifth St. that has served as city hall for many decades.

The former city hall, which now only houses the police and fire departments, now is called the Public Safety Building, a name recommended by Brosman.

The remainder of the city operations are now housed in the former home of First Bank at the northeast corner of Fifth and Gallatin streets.

Prior to the council’s decision on Monday, the two buildings were being called ‘old city hall’ and ‘new city hall.’

The council and some city committees are continuing to meet in the former city hall. They will begin holding their meetings in the new home of city government after the construction of a new council table is completed.

Mayor Rick Gottman said on Monday that the Illinois Department of Corrections hopes to have the table finished by the middle of next month.
