The Vandalia wrestling team has high expectations for the season, and the season-opener showed that there are good reasons for those hopes.

Despite losing, the Class 1A Vandals wrestled tough to keep the match tight against Class 3A Belleville West on Tuesday night during a 38-31 loss.

Vandalia (0-1) had four pins on the night, with sophomore Kendrick Woolsey (285) recording the fastest in 19 seconds, and junior Ryne Lipsey (120), senior Seth Purcell (170) and sophomore Bobby Bradley (195) also pinning his opponent.

Other winners for the Vandals were sophomore Chaston Womack, a 13-4 winner at 113, and junior Jake Stewart, an 8-6 overtime winner at 182.

The result was a big improvement over last season’s 60-7 loss.

Vandalia continues its season on Saturday at the Civic Memorial Tournament before traveling to Taylorville for a tri-meet with Shelbyville next Wednesday. The first home meet is next Thursday against Hillsboro.
