Vandalia wins freshmen tournament

The Vandalia freshmen volleyball team won the South Central Conference Freshmen Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, defeating Gillespie in three sets, 27-25, 23-25, 15-11.

In pool play, Vandalia defeated Roxana (25-13, 25-18) but split with Greenville (22-25, 25-22) and Carlinville (18-25, 25-16).

Taylor Well had 21 kills for the Vandals during the tournament, and Kate Shields had 14 kills, 11 service aces and three blocks. Megan Godoyo added 33 assists and 17 services aces.

Melissa Davis had nine service aces and served 10 straight times against Roxana, and Brandy Protz had seven kills and nine service aces.

Megan Dugan added 13 service aces.

The six girls each played every minute of all four matches at Hillsboro.
