Vandalia golfers finding success on SIGA Jr. Tour

Two rising seniors at Vandalia Community High School have been finding success on the Southern Illinois Golf Association Junior Tour this summer.

Blake Swofford and RaeChelle Leiken have a combined seven tournament wins in nine chances this summer.

Most recently, each won in the 16-18 age division at the Gambit Junior Cup in Vienna by shooting a round under par, and Leiken won the Jackson Junior Tournament in Murphysboro on Monday, with an 82.

At Vienna, Swofford shot a 68 on the par-72 course to win the event by two strokes. Leiken matched her personal best, shooting a 71 to win by eight strokes.

Two days prior, both won by two strokes at the Mark Beckham Memorial in Salem, with Swofford shooting a 70 and Leiken shooting an 82.

In Swofford’s only other tournament, he was the champion at the Roland Barkau Golf Course in Okawville, winning be seven strokes after shooting a 70.

For Leiken, she has participated in three other tournaments, helping her get to second place in the points standings, with 81.25. She trails the leader by 5.75 points.

•Future Champs in Carterville – Leiken shot an 88 to place fifth. The champion shot an 83.
•Fowler-Bonan Junior Classic in West Frankfort – Leiken shot an 80 to place first by three strokes.
•McLeansboro Junior Foxes in McLeansboro – Leiken shot an 87 to finish second. The champion shot an 84.

The tour continues play through August, with the Players’ Championship to be held on Aug. 6.
