The Vandalia Chamber of Commerce last Thursday paid tribute to the owners and managers of businesses that have been launched in Vandalia in the past year.

Eleven new businesses were on the Chamber's list, though only five attended the breakfast.
Listed as the businesses that were started (or changed ownership) within the past year are: All About You Day Spa, Country Cupboards, Countryside Pet Clinic, Fayette County Real Estate, Jenny's BBQ, Performance Detailing, Riedle Law Office, Sew Right Sisters, Summer Breeze Wine House, Verizon Wireless and Who Says a Man Can't Clean.
Emcee Kevin Childers introduced each new business owner/manager in attendance. The company representatives were asked to tell about their business, explaining the product or service they provide.
Mayor Rick Gottman then addressed the group, telling about progress made by the city and local businesses in the past year.
He mentioned a $750,000 grant the city is using to upgrade sidewalks, streetscapes and streets one block either side of Gallatin. That work will begin on Fourth Street, and could include Fifth Street if funds allow.
Gottman also mentioned the Vandalia River Railroad Walk, a path that has been developed on the old railroad right of way behind the Fayette County Health Department.
Seven Tax Increment Financing projects have been undertaken, he said.
Also, Octochem has expanded for the second time, and CTC Logging has expanded its operations to two locations (one for transporting logs and one for a sawmill operation).
