Vandal wrestlers win 18th straight regional championship

TOLEDO – On the strength of six first-place finishes, the Vandalia wrestling team won the Cumberland Regional Tournament, tallying a team score of 202 while securing its 18th straight team title.

Freshmen Ryne Lipsey (106) and Dalton Blankenship (132); sophomore C.J. Runkel (138); and seniors Daniel Edwards (152), Dayin Godberson (182) and Levi Ulmer (195) each took first-place honors.

Junior Seth Purcell (145) and senior Anthony Fladeland (285) placed second, while junior Tyler Dagen (126) took third.

Those nine individuals will battle at the Robinson Sectional on Friday and Saturday. Following that event will be the individual state tournament, which runs from Feb. 16-18, in Champaign.

Junior Zach Jackson (170) also placed fourth for the Vandals at Cumberland. Freshmen Blake Cripe (160) and Adam Palmer (113), and junior Sean Newcomb (220) did not place for Vandalia.

The team sectional will be in Vandalia on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
