Vandal golfers win home-opener

VANDALIA – Two Ramsey players tied for medalist honors at Vandalia Country Club last Thursday, but consistent scoring from Vandalia’s top four players gave the Vandals the win in a close match.

Senior Jake Bowen led Vandalia with a 42, and three others shot 47 or better, as the Vandals topped Ramsey 180-183. Altamont shot a 194.

Ramsey’s Brady Reiss and Michael Lay each shot a 40 for the match’s best score, but the team’s other two scores were in the 50s.

Also scoring for Vandalia (5-2) were: senior Zach Schaal (45), sophomore Alec Schroeder (46) and freshman Scott Shulman (47). Additional golfers on varsity were sophomore Alex Cogagne (53) and sophomore Levi Cox (54).

Schaal had Vandalia’s lone birdie, needing just two shots on the fifth hole, a par 3.

Other scorers for Ramsey were: Marcus Cross (51) and Ryan Marley (52). Additional golfers were: Logan Ernst and Mason Fesser, who both shot a 53.

JV golfers for the Vandals were: Nathaniel Weaver (45), Kain DuFaux (48), Zach McCaslin (53), James Bowen (56), Riley Herron (60) and Ashton Harrison (61).

On Tuesday, the Vandals placed fourth at Litchfield.

Bowen led the team with a 45, while Schroeder added a 49, Schaal shot a 52 and Well and Cogagne each had a 53.

Vandalia's team total of 199 fell behind Raymond (171), Taylorville (172) and Litchfield (181).

Litchfield's Tyler Sneed shot a 36 to earn medalist honors.

The Vandals (5-5) were scheduled to travel to Pana last Monday, but that event was rescheduled to next Monday due to excessive heat.
