The golf season is winding down, and the Vandals will head to Springfield next Monday for the South Central Conference Championships.
Playing at The Rail Golf Course, starting at 9:30 a.m., Vandalia (7-12-1) will seek to meet its preseason goal of finishing in the top three.
The Vandals have struggled of late, failing score less than 190 in six of the last seven nine-hole events, and will be extended to an 18-hole event on Monday.
In last year's championships, senior Jake Shulman had the best score among this season's returners, shooting a 96. Junior Zach Schaal shot a 100 on the course last season.
In the lone 18-hole event of this season, Schaal had an 88 and Shulman had a 94 at the Hickory Stick in Wood River on Aug. 19.
On Tuesday, Vandalia traveled to Taylorville and placed second.
Vandalia shot a 191, and were led by Schaal, whose 45 placed him in a four-way tie for third.
He was followed by freshman Richie Well (47), Shulman (48) and freshman Levi Cox (51) in the team scoring.
Also golfing for Vandalia were freshman Alec Schroeder (54) and junior Jake Bowen (57).
Taylorville finished first, with a 174, and Shelbyville shot a 196 to place third.
On Monday, the Vandals played their first match in a week, placing third against Hillsboro and Marquette Catholic.
Shulman shot a 46 to lead Vandalia (6-11-1), and he was followed by Well (48), Schaal (49) and Bowen (50).
Also golfing were Schroeder (53) and Cox (63).
Vandalia’s team score was 193. Marquette Catholic (14-3) won, with a 158, and Hillsboro (8-13) followed with a 176.
