Two double-doubles lead Vandals to win in conference-opener

GILLESPIE - Double-doubles from Chase Woolsey and Michael Wells plus 20 points from Tim Ritchey propelled the Vandals in a fast-paced 76-60 South Central Conference win at Gillespie on Friday.

Woolsey had 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Wells had 16 points and 10 rebounds, in his first career double-double. Aaron Harter added 14 points.

The Vandals pulled out to a 42-25 halftime lead, but Gillespie battled back in the third period, coming out of the break with a more physical style that alowed the Miners to get back within six points at one time.

Vandalia (3-2, 1-0 SCC) led by eight going into the final period, and Wells and Ritchey then combined to score 15 of the team's 21 points, while the defense held Gillespie to just 13.

The Vandals are back in action on Saturday night at East Alton-Wood River, with the JV game to begin at 6 p.m.

For the JV squad, they lost 63-61 at Gillespie. Sophomore Collin Nestleroad injured several fingers on the final play of the game, and his status moving forward is uncertain.
