Trash pickup changes

Vandalia residents are being reminded this week of some new guidelines for their trash pickup.

Alderman Ken Hubler noted at Monday’s city council meeting that the waste hauler for city residents, Doty Sanitation Service began delivering to residents the 96-gallon trash containers that are now to be used for their trash pickup.
And after filling those new containers, residents are to place them streetside for emptying, as Doty will no longer be making pickups in alleys.
The orange containers are being provided to residents at no cost, and each container has a serial number that ties it to a specific residence. In the event that a container is damaged, the household will be charged a $65 replacement fee.
The use of the new containers, and Doty’s streetside pickup, are part of a new, six-year contract approved by the city council at its May 16 meeting.
Under that contract, monthly trash pickup rate for residents stays at the current rate, $13.38, for two years. It increases to $13.88 in the third year, $14.38 in the fourth year, $14.88 in the fifth year and $15.38 in the final year.
At the meeting that the contract was approved, David Doty explained that his firm will pick up only that trash inside the orange containers. It will no longer pick up trash placed on the ground in bags or other containers.
Also at Monday’s meeting, Mayor Rick Gottman announced that he is still looking for a code enforcement official.
For the second meeting in a row, Gottman announced that a potential candidate had decided on the afternoon of a council meeting to not accept a mayoral appointment.
The mayor said that he will continue trying to find a successor to Keith Meadows and that he may be calling a special meeting to fill the position.
Meadows, who has been the city’s code official since 2002, is retiring on Aug. 5.
In other action:
• The council accepted the resignation of Joe Patterson, a mechanic at the city garage, and voted to advertise the opening.
• The council approved three lake lot transfers: No. 111, from Ty Cottingham of Collinsville to Todd Blackwell of Brownstown; No. 153A from Steve C. Henna of Vandalia to Sandy Townsend of Vandalia; and No. 90, from Phyllis Laster of Maryville to Nate Peterson of Ramsey.
• The council approved an ordinance stating that it will comply with the state’s prevailing wage rate law, with Alderman Mike Hobler casting the lone dissenting vote.
