VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals will be in Hillsboro on Saturday morning for the South Central Conference Tournament.

Sophomore Hannah Blythe is the favorite to win the singles championship, having defeated the No. 1 player from each Greenville, Hillsboro and Roxana twice during the season.

The closest any of them were to beating Blythe was Roxana junior Sami Owsley, who forced a tiebreaker in a 4-6, 6-2 (10-7) loss on Sept. 24.

Blythe went 2-1 at last season’s conference tournament to take third. Those in the championship singles and doubles matches earn all-conference honors.

On the season, she is 13-2 in singles play, with her only losses coming at Effingham and at the Centralia Invitational.

Krystyn Nichols will also play singles for Vandalia.

She had been slotted into the No. 5 position all season long, and takes a 4-7 record into the tournament.

In doubles, Vandalia will use teams of senior Karlee Brimberry/junior Courtney Ulmer, and senior Megan Dothager/freshman Emma Meyer.

Combined, the four players have a 29-32 doubles record for the season, but none of them will be playing with their usual doubles partner, though the individual athleticism of each player shouldn’t make that a problem.

Vandalia closes the regular season at home next Tuesday against Teutopolis.

The sectional tournament is on Oct. 18 in Effingham.

This past Monday, the Lady Vandals picked up their fourth win of the season, sweeping the season series with East Alton-Wood River with an 8-1 victory.

Vandalia swept the singles, with every player winning by at least a score of 10-2.

Junior varsity players filled in for the doubles matches. Kiersten and Gabby Dossett earned their first win of the season in the No. 2 flight, and Rebekah Sanders and Madisyn Holman each earned their first career varsity victories in the No. 3 flight.

On Tuesday, Vandalia earned its fifth win of the season, beating Shelbyville, 5-4.

Blythe, Ulmer, Dothager and Meyer won in singles, and Dothager and Blythe teamed in doubles for the match-winning point.

Last Thursday’s match at Marquette Catholic was canceled due to rain.
