Tennis team has solid week with two victories

Vandalia had a much better showing the second time around against Roxana.

After losing to the Lady Shells, 7-2, in the season-opener, the Lady Vandals nearly pulled out a win at Roxana on Tuesday, falling, 5-4.

In all four of its wins, Vandalia  (3-5) won a tie-breaker set.

Sophomore Hannah Blythe earned a win in No. 1 singles (4-6, 6-2, 10-7), and freshman Emma Meyer won in the No. 6 flight (3-6, 7-5, 10-7).

In doubles, Blythe and senior Karlee Brimberry picked up an 8-8 (7-1) win in the No. 1 flight, and senior Kristyn Nichols teamed with Meyer to win the No. 6 flight, 8-8 (9-7).

Brimberry and junior Courtney Ulmer each fell one point short of forcing a tie-breaker in No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

The Lady Vandals picked up an additional point, but fell just short in the second match of the season against Greenville.

Vandalia had a slow start, going 1-5 in singles, but rallied to win all three doubles matches in Monday’s 5-4 loss, an improvement over a 6-3 loss it suffered on Aug. 29.

Sophomore Hannah Blythe was the lone singles winner, picking up her sixth win of the season in defeating Abby Gaffner, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 1 flight.

She teamed with senior Karlee Brimberry to win the top flight in doubles, 11-10 (7-4), and other winners for the Lady Vandals (3-4) were junior Courtney Ulmer/senior Megan Dothager, 10-8, in the No. 2 flight, and senior Kristyn Nichols/freshman Emma Meyer, 10-6, in the No. 3 flight.

Vandalia evened its season record last Thursday with its second straight victory, taking an 8-1 win at East Alton-Wood River.

The Lady Vandals (3-3) swept the singles and then used junior varsity players to take two of the three doubles matches.

Freshmen Gabby Dossett and Kierstyn Dossett earned their first career varsity win, taking the No. 2 flight in doubles, 8-1.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Vandals picked up their first win since Aug. 27 with a 6-3 victory at Effingham.

Tied at three after the six singles matches, Vandalia (2-3) dominated in sweeping the three doubles matches to take the win.

Senior Kristyn Nichols picked up her first doubles win of the season, teaming with freshman Emma Meyer to win, 6-2, 6-2.
