Tennis finishes third at Centralia Invite

The Lady Vandals tennis team finished third at the Centralia Invitational on Saturday, with sophomore Hannan Blythe taking the second-place medal in singles.

She defeated the No. 1 player from Centralia and the No. 2 player from Olney, while losing to Olney's top player.

Also in singles was junior Courtney Ulmer, who made the third round but did not place.

In doubles, Vandalia seniors Karlee Brimberry and Megan Dothager went 1-2, and senior Kristyn Nichols and freshman Emma Meyer were 0-2.

On Monday, the Lady Vandals returned home for the first time since Aug. 29, and lost to Hillsboro, 6-3.

Blythe earned her 10th singles win of the season, with a 10-1 victory in the No. 1 flight, and she and Brimberry were 10-8 winners in the No. 1 flight of doubles.

Dothager and Ulmer also won in No. 2 doubles, 10-8.

Ulmer forced a tie-breaker in No. 3 singles, but would fall, 10-10 (5-7).

Other singles scores were:
•No. 2 Brimberry lost, 6-10
•No. 4 Dothager lost, 7-10
•No. 5 Nichols lost, 7-10
•No. 6 Meyer lost, 2-10

The other doubles match saw Nichols and Meyer fall, 1-10.
Results from Tuesday's match against Centralia were not reported by press time.
Vandalia hosts Marquette Catholic on Thursday, travels to East Alton-Wood River next Monday and hosts Shelbyville next Tuesday.
