Tax cap referendum nixed

Editor:
A tax cap referendum that was to be placed on the November ballot has been rejected by the Fayette County Board.
It would’ve given voters a chance to decide whether or not to put a cap on future real estate taxes of 5 percent per year or the consumer price index, whichever is less. (The consumer price index was .7 percent last year.) More than 40 Illinois counties now have it.
The plan was advanced by the local Tea Party, with help from Pine Ridge Homes, Donaldson Service in Beecher City and others. They received no help from the farm groups or the political parties.
Tea Party President Todd Slingerland said that the group has not decided whether to promote the tax cap in two years.
The Tea Party group meets the second Monday of the month at Culvers in Effingham at 6:30 p.m.
