HILLSBORO - Vandalia was unable to generate any momentum on Friday, as the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis ran away with the championship of the Hillsboro Regional.
Top-seeded T-Town scored consistently throughout the game, building an early leading and increasing it over the final three quarters of an 85-48 victory.
Vandalia senior Aaron Harter paced the second-seeded Vandals (15-13) with 14 points. He, along with Michael Wells, Chase Woolsey, Wade Cowger and Leyton Godoyo, was playing in the final game of his career.
The Wooden Shoes committed turnovers on their first two possessions, allowing Vandalia 2-0 lead, but T-Town would quickly shore up its game and led 24-12 by the end of the period.
That lead would grow to 21 by halftime, and by another point as the teams entered the final eight minutes.
There, the Wooden Shoes cranked up their offense, scoring 28 points to Vandalia's 13 to take the regional championship.
One positive for Vandalia was its free-throw shooting. The team was 13-of-16 from the stripe.
Woolsey had nine points and three rebounds, and Wells had eight points and a team-high five rebounds.
Godoyo added seven points, while junior Colton Woolsey had six, and Cowger and sophomore Collin Nesterload each had two.
This is a breaking news story. More information will be available in the Feb. 28 edition of The Leader-Union.
