SW snaps Vandals’ three-game winning streak

Piasa Southwestern fought off a late comeback effort to snap the Vandals’ three-game win streak with a 4-2 win on their home diamond on Tuesday.

Southwestern scored a run in the first, one in the third and two in the sixth, then stopped the Vandals’ seventh-inning comeback effort at two runs.
In the seventh inning, Garett McNary walked, moved to second on a single by Caleb Slater. Both advanced on a fielder’s choice by Mitchell Casey and scored on a single by Cameron Gelsinger.
Gelsinger took the loss, giving up four runs (one earned) while striking out six and walking one.

Vandalia pounded out 17 hits and two Vandals pitchers shared a five-hitter in an 18-3 win over Morrisonville on Monday.
Caleb Slater led the Vandals hitting attack with four runs batted in, those coming on a grand slam, his second homer in two games.
After Morrisonsville scored its only runs in the first inning, the Vandals tied it in the third when Nathan Casey drove in two runs with a triple and Marcus Zimmerman brought Casey home with a single.
Slater’s grand slam was the highlight of the eight-run fourth inning. He drove in Garett McNary and Mitchell Casey, who reached on walks, and Zimmerman, who walked.
Blake Morrison went 3 1/3 innings for the Vandals, giving up four hits and three runs while striking out five and walking four.
McNary gave up just one hit, struck out five and walked three in 3 2/3 innings on the mound.

On Saturday at Vandalia Mutual Field, the Vandals picked up wins against Brownstown-St. Elmo and Okawville in two five-inning contests.
The Vandals started the four-game day also featuring Robinson with an 11-0 win over the Bombers.
Slater hit his homer to lead off the four-run second inning, and he held Brownstown-St. Elmo hitless in four innings on the mound, striking out seven and walking four.
Casey, who drove in four runs in the game, also hit his two-run shot in the second inning.
Kyle Guffey pitched the fifth inning for the Vandals, giving up one hit and a walk while striking out three.
Nate Philpot had the Bombers’ lone hit. Philpot took the loss for Brownstown-St. Elmo, giving up 11 runs and six hit while striking out three and walking five.
Saturday’s game against Vandalia was the Bombers’ first without standout Lewis Brown, who is expected to miss up to four weeks with an abdominal injury.

In their second game of the day, the Vandals needed only nine hits in pasting Okawville, 11-1.
Singles by Thomas Ritchey and Zimmerman, and a walk to Nathan Casey led to three runs in the first inning, with Casey scoring on a bases-loaded walk and Zimmerman coming home on an error.
McNary, Mitchell Casey, Ritchey and Morrison all had safeties and Nathan Casey walked, with all five getting an RBI in the second inning.
Casey homered after Morrison reached on a fielder’s choice in the third inning, and Cameron Gelsinger scored the Vandals’ final run, reaching on a fielder’s choice advancing to third on two wild pitches and scoring on a single by Markus Isaiah.
Garett Austin got the win for Vandalia, spacing out six hits and giving up five walks.

Last Friday, Garett McNary had his first two career home runs and drove in five runs as a comeback effort by the Vandals fell short in a 16-11 loss to Hillsboro.
McNary’s first home run gave the Vandals a brief 3-2 lead after one inning.
But Hillsboro responded with five runs in the second, one in the second and five in the fifth to lead 13-3.
Vandalia narrowed the gap with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, three coming on a home run by Slater.
In the sixth inning, the Vandals closed to within three, 13-10, with McNary’s second homer, a two-run shot.
The Hiltoppers secured the win with three runs in the top of the three. Isaiah scored Vandalia’s final run in the seventh, reaching on a single and scoring on a single by Ritchey.
Wells suffered the loss for Vandalia, allowing eight runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out three and walking four in 2 2/3 innings.
Austin allowed two runs and two hits, giving up one walk; McNary allowed three runs on four hits and had one strikeout; Slater allowed two runs on two hits and had two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings; and Guffey gave up one run, one hit and one walk.
