Support Relay for Life

-A A +A
By Dave Bell

Each year, the people of Fayette County display an unbelieveable degree of generosity as they support the local Relay for Life.

The annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society features teams of walkers from throughout the county, raising money to support the fight against cancer.

Starting at 4:30 p.m. this Saturday and continuing throughout the night, those walkers will be circling the track at Vandalia Community High School.

If you haven't already participated through being part of a team or contributing to a team, there's still time to be involved. Donations will be accepted at the event, or you can purchase a luminaria in honor or in memory of a friend or family member who has done battle with this disease.

One of the highlights of the event is the Ceremony of Hope at 9 p.m. At that time, the luminaria will be lighted and all other lights in the stadium will be turned off while the honorees are remembered. It's a touching moment in an event that's already charged with emotion.

Last year, the county's Relay for Life generated $78,000. That's a fantastic achievement for a county our size and with our demographics. We challenge residents to once again dig deep to support this worthy cause. It speaks well of the generosity of our people that we, year after year, continue to set new records for giving.
