Summer lunch program successful

Editor:
The summer lunch project was a success!
Once again, the citizens of Fayette County rallied to meet a need in their community. “Summer Lunches for Kids” began in 2008 with a mission to provide children in the Vandalia School District with FREE and nutritious lunches during the summer months when they were not in school.
It was brought to our attention that more than 50 percent of our children were eligible for free or reduced price lunches during the school year. Many families struggle to feed their children during the summer when they are at home for all three meals.
This spring, we asked for peanut butter and jelly, and you gladly brought it in. We asked for monetary donations to help purchase additional items to put in the lunch bags, and we were overwhelmed by your generosity. We also called for volunteers to make the sandwiches, pack the lunches and take them to the sites twice a week, and you willingly signed up.
In addition to providing lunches twice a week at the American Legion Home in Vandalia and in Shobonier, we expanded our ministry to include Rogier Park, Ramsey and Vera. A total of 3,367 lunches were distributed county wide this summer because you cared.
“Summer Lunches for Kids” was successful because we saw a need and we worked together to fill it. In Matthew 25:35, Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.” A big THANK YOU to all who helped make this happen. It would take an entire page to thank each of you by name, but you know who you are.
Next summer, we hope to serve even more children. Through this project, we have learned that no task is too big when the people of Fayette County work together.
Thanks again for all your help.
