ANNOUNCEMENTS
Wednesday, Aug. 25
• Royal Neighbors of America #5784 Appreciation Dinner, 11:30 a.m., Mary Ann’s Restaurant. Reservations had to be made by Aug. 21.
Thursday, Aug. 26
• Exxon/Mobil Annuitants, noon, Vandalia Ponderosa.
• St. Elmo Unit of Home and Community Education will go to Highland for lunch at the House of Plenty. They will meet at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church to share rides.
Friday, Aug. 27
• Family Fun Night, 6 p.m., First Baptist Church.
Saturday, Aug. 28
• Lilly-Wright Reunion will be held at the First Church of God S.H.E.D. Those attending are to take potluck dishes to share at the noon meal. Fried chicken, beverages and table service will be provided. After the meal, there will be a business meeting and a white elephant sale, and the sale items should be taken that day. Births, marriages, deaths, etc., will be recorded with information those attending take with them. There also will be a raffle for a cross-stitch picture – tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
Sunday, Aug. 29
• The St. Louis Teen Challenge will be at the First Assembly of God Church at 6 p.m. The Teen Challenge has an amazing track record of helping those with addictions. If you have questions you can call 829-3324 or 829-5732.
Monday, Aug. 30
• There are no regularly scheduled meetings on the fifth Mondays.
Tuesday, Aug. 31
• There are no regularly scheduled meetings on the fifth Tuesdays.
Thursday, Sept. 2
• St. Elmo Business Association, noon, Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
• Wheatland Unit of Home and Community Education, 1:30 p.m., home of Sandra Lovett.
• St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club,  7 p.m., rural home of Tammy Lash. Members can meet at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church to share rides. The program will be given by Lash on Kitchen Designs.
August Information
This is the first time in 823 years that the month of August has had five Sundays, five Mondays and five Tuesdays.
Coming Event
The Avena Township Park Board annual auction to help raise money for the St. Elmo Community Park and Swimming Pool will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4. Items for the auction can be taken to the park starting at 7 a.m. on Sept. 3.
American Legion
Dues for the 2010-11 year now are due for the American Legion Post #420. At the post meeting held the evening of Aug. 10, it was announced that 34 have already paid. Dues can be paid to Xon Hanna or any of the officers.
Commander of District 23, Ralph Brown of Edgewood, was a visitor. Others present were Commander Charles Bosomworth, Doyle Beck, Clement Lilly, Xon Hanna, Richard Lowe, Ernie Myers and Laverne Wright.
Bids on the heating and air conditioning for the Legion Home will be accepted.
The Legion will march with colors in the Labor Day parade. The Legion also will have the annual fish stand that also will sell hot dogs and sodas. Last year, the Legion fish sandwiches sold came to 160 pounds of fish.
The Legion voted to donate $25 to help with the POW MIA rally that will be held in O’Fallon on Sunday, Sept. 19.
The bass tournament for youngsters sponsored by the Legion will be at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19.
The former officers who have been re-elected were installed by Lowe. The officers are Bosomworth, commander; Lucian Chandler, senior vice; R. W. Smith, junior vice; Myers, adjutant; Hanna, finance officer; Lilly, service officer; Lowe, chaplain; and Beck, sergeant-at-arms.
Vit-Em-In Social
The annual ice cream social was held the evening of Aug. 19 in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church, with 17 attending.
Doris Jones furnished homemade vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet, and Bob Cox furnished homemade butter pecan and strawberry ice creams. They also provided beverages and table service. The potluck dishes included sandwiches, finger foods and desserts.
Those attending in addition to Jones and Cox were Dewey and Elizabeth Bail, Marilyn Claypool, Pastor John Eisfelder, Barb Kelley, Delva Krost, Ed and Barb Lane, Bob and Joanne Owen, Rosemary Owen, and Jack and Marilyn Sproat, and guests Dee and Leatha Newberry.
A short business followed the meal, then the evening was spent visiting.
Historical Vandalia Inc.
Discussed at the Historical Vandalia Inc. meeting held the evening of Aug. 16 at the Fayette County Museum in Vandalia were the next steps in the restoration of the museum’s upstairs.
In addition to the museum, board members have Season of Entertainment tickets to sell as a fundraiser for the museum.
ickets cost $30 each and includes the following three performances that will be held in the Vandalia First United Methodist Church handicapped-accessible large fellowship hall:  Life of Harriet Tubman, an American Abolitionist, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19; Life of Amelia Earhart, an American aviator, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov.7; and History of the DeMoulin Factory in Greenville at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23.
Refreshments will be provided after each of the programs.
Home-grown tomatoes are available at the museum. Also, anyone wanting a gooseberry or blackberry pie can call the museum at 283-4866.
Present for the board meeting were Jim Brewer and Mary Ann Rhoades of Ramsey, Marilyn Beyes of Smithboro, Barbara Buckland of Brownstown and Steve Durbin, and Phil Shroyer and Mary Truitt of Vandalia.
RNA Teddy Bears
Royal Neighbors of America #5784 on Aug. 18 presented the Vandalia dentist office of Mark Brunk with 10 teddy bears to give to children getting work done on their teeth.
This is one project RNA is required to do each year.
Taking the bears were RNA members Della Stewart, Shirley Smith and Leona Wright. Accepting them were Dr. Brunk, Dr. Michael Lask, Brittney Davis, Susan Durbin and Marsha Frailey.
Shelton’s 86th Birthday
Annabelle Shelton of Friendship Manor Nursing Home observed her 86th birthday on Sunday Aug. 15. Annabel has a twin sister, Avanelle, of Mason.

Royal Neighbors of America #5784 has several projects it needs to do each year, and one is present teddy bears to doctors to give to children. On Aug. 18, they took 10 teddy bears to the dentist office of Dr. Mark Brunk.
