Annual Soup Supper
The St. Elmo Education Foundation will have its annual soup supper from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, in the high school cafeteria.
4-H Skating Party Announcement
A 4-H skating party that will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, at the Silver Star Skating Rink at 1505 N. U.S. Route 45 in Mattoon is for all youth in Clay, Coles, Effingham, Fayette and Jasper counties.
It is being sponsored by Lil’l Bit County 4-H Club in Coles County. The cost is $4 per person and $1 for shoe rental.
Reservations have to be made by March 2 by calling Patti Logan at the Effingham Extension Office, 217-347-7773.
St. Mary’s Epiphany Dinner
Following St. Mary’s Catholic Church 5:30 p.m. Mass on Jan 2, a Christmas dinner was held in the Parish Hall. A chicken dinner was catered by Mary Ann’s Restaurant and the desserts were made by Mona Durbin, Karen Denning, Carol Rine, Pat Porter and Lavonne Kramer.
Entertainment was bingo played for prizes. Libby Kessel called the numbers. Winners were Lamina Buzzard, Karen Denning, Ed Durbin, Mark Heischmidt, Beth Karnes, Brittni Karnes, Lavonne Kramer, Lisa Koberlein, Pat Leach, Darlene May, Chuck Myers, Mary Myers, Bill Overton, Josh Overton, Kaleb Overton, Will Overton, Pat Porter, Carol Rine, Betty Springman, Bill Springman and Richard Tucker.
CCW
Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance opened the Jan. 5 meeting of the Council of Catholic Women held in St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parish Hall.
The main business was discussion of the Epiphany dinner. Christmas decorations were to be taken down after the Jan. 9 Mass.
Hostess Lisa Niemeyer served refreshments of chicken salad sandwiches on small buns, cheeseball, crackers, cheesecake and soda to Karen Denning, Mona Durbin, Libby Kessel, Lavonne Kramer, Pat Porter, Carol Rine and Betty Springman.
Friendly Neighbors
At the Friendly Neighbors meeting at noon Jan. 6 at Mary Ann’s Restaurant, a contribution was made through the Red Cross for disaster relief for flood victims.
Those present at the meeting were Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown, Cora Miley of Beecher City, Shirley Smith and son of Altamont and Dick Lowe, Bob and Joanne Owen, Rosemary Owen, and R. W. and Mary Smith of St. Elmo.
Wright’s Corner HCE
“What’s your best money saving tip?” was the roll call answered by Carol Austin, Janice Garrison, Kate Jennings, Amanda Miller, Mary Smith and Helen Wright at the Wright’s Corner Unit of Home and Community Education meeting held the afternoon of Jan. 6 at the Loudon Town House.
Garrison gave the special feature, “Make it Yourself,” and the major lesson, “Making Your Dollars Stretch.”
At the Feb. 3 meeting, valentines will be collected for veterans, and they should be signed with only a first name.
Wheatland HCE
A guest, Trish Merriman, joined Wheatland Unit members of Home and Community Education, Karen Hyde, Erna Koontz and Joyce Moore, in answering roll call, “What’s your best money saving tip?” The meeting was held the afternoon of Jan. 7 at Mary Ann’s Restaurant and opened with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Joan Aderman sent a humorous article to read, “Quotes of Useless Information.”
Hyde gave the major lesson, “Making Your Dollars Stretch.”
During the social time, each ate her choice of Mary Ann’s pies.
Women’s Civic Club
The St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club Jan. 7 meeting was held in the St. Elmo Public Library. Pledge of Allegiance and club collect opened the meeting. After a short business meeting, Karen Denning read a cute article, “The Week after Christmas.”
There was no program speaker; the program was playing bingo. Each of those attending took a $5 wrapped gift for the prizes. The bingo caller was Libby Kessel.
After bingo, refreshments were served by Mary Jane Mattix and Anna Jean Rhodes from a table that was centered with a white snowman bear. Refreshments included chocolate cake, ice cream, spicy party mix, berry nut mix, mixed chocolate cranberries and lemonade.
Others present were Susan Belden, Sheila Himes, Deb Hough, Lucille Koeberlein, Mary Myers and Pat Porter.
Liz Stoner was present for a short time – she brought several items for the Valentine bags that will be packed at the Feb. 4 meeting as Valentine gifts to Aperion Care residents.
