St. Elmo Public Library District
After approving the minutes and paying the bills (including those to Dynix, Sebco, Brodart and Gumdrop Books), the St. Elmo Public Library District Board at the September 13 meeting at St. Elmo voted to set up an MMDA account at the Fayette County Bank, with the same signators as the checking account – Rod Crawford, Naomi Jennings, Cynthia Fedrigon, Tony Koberlein and Mary K. Spitler – to earn interest on funds until needed to pay the bills.
Wayne Moran has a form for maintenance for the librarians to use.
Ginny Wilbur reminded the board of the Nadine fundraiser for Sept. 15 and says the Brownstown Branch has an entryway light out.
JoAn Evans reported she is waiting on an estimate to fix the leak in the roof. Dona Jo Henry has donated many new decorations for the library.
New bookshelves are in place, the water cooler base is cracked and they would like a lockable supply cabinet.
She also brought a sample of the order form for the book spines and said her after-school craft class would begin Sept. 27 at the Beecher City Branch.
Billie Enlow distributed a sample Kindle procedure from Mt. Zion Library. She said Fleeta Guffey would like the library to be a place for voters to register, and Billie was to check on this. Head Start began this week and after-school crafts will begin in October at the St. Elmo Public Library.
The board voted to renew the movie license.
Fedrigon will be asked to be election official.
The board voted to allow employees the opportunity to carry over up to five vacation days at the end of the year.
Historical Vandalia
Inc. Board
At the Historical Vandalia Inc. meeting held the evening of Sept. 17 in the Fayette County Museum in Vandalia, plans were finalized for the rummage and bake sale set for this Saturday in the museum garden.
Another fundraiser for the restoration of the museum is a Christmas quilt raffle.
The quilt is mostly red and white, is being hand-quilted and is 100-inches-by-120-inches.
The tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be held at the Dec. 17 board meeting. The museum and board members have tickets to sell.
It was reported that the museum had 179 registered visitors in August. A number of old items have been donated to the museum since the last board meeting.
Board members who attended the first of the Season of Events on Sept. 16 were very impressed with the presentation of Martha Washington and appreciate the more than 50 in attendance.
Present at the board meeting were President Steve Durbin, Phil Shroyer and Mary Truitt of Vandalia, Marilyn Beyes of Smithboro, Barbara Buckland of Brownstown, Jim Brewer of Ramsey and Anna Jean Rhodes of St. Elmo.
Vit-Em-In Class Wiener Roast
The Vit-Em-In Sunday school class of the First United Methodist Church enjoyed a 5 p.m. wiener roast on Sept. 20 at the rural home of Jack and Marilyn Sproat.
Co-hosts were LeMar and Billye Jo Marchman
The Sproats’ two-car garage doors were opened, and lawn chairs and food tables were inside. Marilyn used fall decorations on the walls and Billye Jo used a fall angel as a centerpiece on the serving table. Jack and LeMar were in charge of roasting the hot dogs. In addition to the hot dogs and buns and accompaniments furnished by the hosts, there was a variety of potluck dishes those attending took.
In addition to the Sproats and Marchmans, those present were Richard Lowe, who gave the meal blessing, Elizabeth Bail, Bob Cox, Rene Edwards, Ed and Barb Lane, Frank and Delva Krost, Bob and Joanne Owen, Rosemary Owen and Anna Jean Rhodes.
There was no business meeting, just visiting.
Friendship Quilt Club
Friendship Quilt Club met the evening of Sept. 20 at the St. Elmo Public Library.
A thank-you note was being sent to Angie’s Nine Patch quilt shop at Effingham for her quilt “fat quarter” donations.
Discussed was a project to make wheel chair bags to donate to nursing homes at Christmas. A project for the club that Tonya Austin is in charge of has been started: selling raffle tickets on a basket quilt; the time the drawing will be held has not been decided.
Peggy Stolte explained that for a round robin program, a quilt top center block will be passed person to person, and each one will add a border to the quilt until it reaches quilt size.
Joy Edwards passed around a pattern book that has embroidered quilt blocks.
Edwards and Karen Roedl received birthday gifts, and Roedl, Stolte and Chris Luster received the door prizes. Luster and Roedl were hostesses who served refreshments.
In addition to Edwards and Roedl of Altamont, Austin of St. Elmo, Luster of Ramsey and Stolte of Farina, the seven present included Roselyn Stine and Judy Barnick, both of Farina.
