• St. Elmo Home and Community Education will go to Tuscola to the Flesor’s Candy Kitchen. They will leave no later than 9 a.m., because their appointment is 10:30 p.m. They also will eat lunch there.
• Exxon/Mobil annuitants will eat lunch at noon at the Litchfield Chinese Restaurant.
Future Announcement
A St. Elmo Christian Music Fest will be held on Saturday, July 27, in the First Church of God S.H.E.D. at 3 p.m. Admission is free, but there will be a love offering taken for Inner City Mission.
On the program will be the Jeff Higginson Band, St. Elmo Christian Church Reverb, Praise Band and Morning Glories, Freedom Reigns in Christ band and special speakers, Andrew Perrett, Tom Fedrigon, Tim Caraway and Jim Giffin.
Community Clothes Closet
The public is urged to go to the Community Clothes Closet, located in the First United Methodist Church parsonage.
The clothes racks are full of summer clothing.
Very little sells for more than $2, and most of the numerous articles of children’s clothes sell for a $1 or less. It is reported that the clothing is in excellent condition.
Christian Day at Busch Stadium
Many from St. Elmo attended  Christian Day at Busch Stadium on July 7. They enjoyed the Cardinal/Marlins ballgame, which the Cardinals won, and the featured after-the-game speaker, Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty. Members of the Cardinals and Marlins also shared testimonies.
Those attending included 125 representing St. Elmo Christian Church and 45 representing St. Elmo First United Methodist Church.
Lions Club
Planning for the Labor Day Parade was the main topic of the meeting of the St. Elmo Lions Club held July 8 at Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
The theme this year is F.I.R.E, an acronym for Future-Industry-Recreation-Economy.
President Dave Maxey led in the pledge of allegiance at 6 p.m., and Richard Lowe gave the meal blessing.
July Lions Club anniversaries recognized were: Lewis Crawford, 18 years; Richard Lowe, 18 hours; Mark Lash, 12 years; and Rex Reeder, two years.
The 13 members present were Don Crawford, John Crawford, Dave Cox, Pee Wee Denton, Roger Fulk, Bob Lowe, Richard Lowe, LeMar Marchman, Maxey, Dee Newberry, Lloyd Stanley, Bob Wells and Randy Wolf.
Avena Park Board
The Avena Township Park Board monthly meetings are on the evening of the second Tuesdays, but because of several conflicts, the July meeting was rescheduled for July 16.
American Legion
The Labor Day fish stand was discussed at the July 9 meeting of American Legion Post #420 held in the Legion Home.
The fish stand also will sell hot dogs.
At the August meeting, it will be finalized who will be responsible for getting the supplies before the end of August.
Dues for the 2013-14 year now are due. They are $25. The Legion is trying to encourage young veterans to become Legion members.
Tabled until the August meeting were plans to start remodeling the inside of the Legion building.
Present at the meeting were Doyle Beck, Bob Bosler, Dave Cox, Bud Himes, Clement Lilly, Wayne Lovett, Richard Lowe, R. W. Smith, Jack Sproat and Max Watson.
Lunch Bunch
Eating with the Lunch Bunch at Mary Ann’s Restaurant at noon July 11 were Paul Gene Clark of Salem, Janet Funneman of Teutopolis and her daughter and granddaughter, Angela Borrell and Emily Borrell of Flora, Pat Porter of Farina, and Karen Denning, Anna Jean Rhodes and Marjorie Sarver of St. Elmo.
Eddie Tate of Mt. Zion and Bill Tate of Washington, Mo., ate in another room at the restaurant, but visited with the Lunch Bunch before leaving.
Women’s Civic Club
The St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club has regular meetings September through May, but the bylaws state that the Board of Officers needs to meet at least once before July 31 to set the budget and approve the programs to be printed in the club program book in August.
The officers met the evening of July 11 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parish Hall with the following present: Pat Porter, president; Libby Kessel and Ann Rowland, co-second vice presidents; Karen Denning, third vice president; Anna Jean Rhodes, recording and corresponding secretary; and Elizabeth Stoner, treasurer. Lucille Koeberlein, first vice, was unable to be present.
After the meeting, Porter served chocolate iced brownies and peach iced tea.
Those who pay the 2013-14 year’s dues of $15 by July 31 will have their names in the program book.
The club meets the first Thursdays September through May. The Sept. 5 meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the St. Elmo Public Library.
Wheatland HCE July Special Activity
A one and a half hour tour of the Hodgson Flour Mill at Effingham was given to the Wheatland Unit of Home and Community Education the morning of July 11.
Hope Wingst of Farina, the quality assurance manager, gave the tour. One of the areas in the mill is for gluten-free products.
The following HCE members and guests met at the CROSS in Effingham to go to the nearby mill: Karen Hyde and husband Noel of Edgewood, and Sandra Lovett and her husband Wayne of Brownstown, Ethelyn Williams and her husband Melvin and Marilyn Sproat of St. Elmo. They all went to Niemerg’s in Effingham for lunch and visiting.
St. Elmo Public Library District
A budget hearing was held at 7 p.m. on July 11 prior to the regular St. Elmo Public Library District Board of Trustees meeting.
After approving the minutes and paying the bills, Kathy Spitler read a thank-you note from Robin Shuda. The Beecher City Branch summer reading program children had made a thank-you card for the Library Board
Beecher City Branch reported that most of the maintenance work has been completed.
Fifty-one children and eight helpers attended the summer reading program over the last five weeks.
They need a larger file for their registration cards.
The St. Elmo Public Library will put unused library items on the exchange.
The SRP pizza party is July 16. After the SRP ends, George Ohnesorge will call about doing the floors at the St. Elmo Library.
Billie Enlow presented a new book covering system called CoLibri that the librarians would like to purchase. The cost is approximately $2,000 and they believe it would save time and be a better way to cover books. The board will study it and try to find other libraries that use it for their review of the system.
Dona Jo Henry discussed use of volunteers to help with cataloging after they have been trained and the idea of a volunteer celebration.
