Fayette County Extension Foundation
At the Fayette County Extension Foundation meeting held the evening of Aug. 20 at the Vandalia Extension Office, final plans were made for the barbecue fundraiser that will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, in Vandalia.
Each of the Home and Community Education units in Fayette County – Bingham/Ramsey, Sefton, St. Elmo, St. Peter, Vandalia Day, Wheatland and Wright’s Corner – will donate a homemade pie for the silent auction. Each of the units also will make the desserts – cookies, cakes, cobblers.
Work schedules for 4-H club members, parents and board members were set up.
Those present at the meeting were Unit 21 County Extension Director Rachelle Hollinshead, Brian and Kyra Willenborg of Vandalia, Mary Ann Rhoades of Ramsey, Kevin Payne of Brownstown, Joan Schaal of St. Peter, Marsha Lilly-Wright of Beecher City and Anna Jean Rhodes of St. Elmo.
The next meeting has been set for Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m., at the Vandalia Extension Office.
St. Elmo Education Foundation
The annual meeting of the St. Elmo Education Foundation was held the evening of Aug. 20 in the Unit Office. New directors elected were Monica Wilhour of Beecher City and Tom Fedrigon of St. Elmo.
Officers elected were: Andra Carson, president; Ann Hinton, vice president; and Marcia Heckert, secretary-treasurer, all from St. Elmo. Other directors are Dona Engeljohn and Jo Stine, both of St. Elmo.
A fundraiser is planned – a soup supper in January. All proceeds go to the scholarship fund.
Tax deductible donations and memberships to the Education Foundation go to the scholarship fund. Members can join as follows: $20 for an individual, $20 for a family, $20 for a business member. Checks can be made out to the St. Elmo Education Foundation and mailed to: P.O. Box 83, St. Elmo, Ill. 62458.
Avena Township Park Board
The Avena Township Park Board had been selling raffle tickets this summer for a rifle, and those present at the meeting the evening of August 20 in the St. Elmo Community Park Centennial Building decided to have the drawing that evening, because 61 tickets had been sold.
Several teenagers were on the park’s basketball court. The board asked one of them to draw the winning name. Freshman Malory Nickerson drew the name of Luke Grobengieser.
When Judy Diller had a book signing earlier in St. Elmo, she donated, in memory of her son, Charles, $140 to the park’s Save the Pool Fund.
Amanda Miller asked the board if the Boy Scouts could clean up the park on Nov. 2 to work on badge, and this was approved.
IPARKS refunded some insurance after the removal of one of the unsafe pavilions. The refund will go toward putting rubber matting (rubber fall) around and under the playground equipment. The board will ask for bids for this project.
Discussed were repairs to the Centennial Building – roofing repairs and painting the inside walls.
The board decided to go ahead and purchase tables and chairs to use in the building in place of the bench/tables. They also will get a cabinet that can be locked to store the paper towels, toilet tissue and cleaning supplies.
Because some of the public has been asking questions on how the tax money has been spent, anyone wanting to know can go to the Fayette County Courthouse – records have to be filed there at the end of each year.
Board members present were President Greg Haslett, Daryl Calvert, Jim Caraway, Ro Mars and Buddy Mitchell.
St. Elmo Unit HCE
Special August activity for the St. Elmo Unit of Home and Community Education was to eat lunch at the Mennonite Country Store on the St. Peter blacktop.
Those going were Goldie Harris, Noma Moore and Sharon Shelton in Karen Wegscheid’s car, and Karen Denning Mary Myers and Ann Rowland in Anna Jean Rhodes van.
The only business meeting was to get volunteers to make cookies and cake or cobbler for the Extension Foundation’s barbecue fundraiser on Sept. 7 and also a pie for the fundraiser’s silent auction.
After lunch and looking around at the items in the store, they went to the bakery and craft store.
