Rhodes-Side Gleanings
on Corn
Remember when the corn was supposed to be “knee high by the 4th of July?” That was a saying for many years ago.
This year, most of the planted fields of corn appeared to be head high and many of the acres were tasseling before the 4th of July, although much of the corn wasn’t planted as early as it is in some years. Many changes evolve over time.
Fayette County HCE Board
Fayette County Home and Community Education members will help with the Fayette County Extension Foundation fundraiser scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Brownstown Elementary School cafeteria.

The board of the Fayette County Home and Community Education at the June 23 meeting held in the Vandalia Extension Office voted to provide desserts from members of the seven units.

Rhodes also reported that in July she needs the following info from each of the units: names of all the members who paid dues for the 2014-15 year, names of those who dropped out, the address changes for the many members who now are on 911 and any phone number changes. She will update the county membership report.
The board voted to donate $25 to the Fayette County Tools for Schools.
The filing fees of $10 had to be paid in June.

Tea Time at St. Elmo HCE
“Tea Time Etiquette” was the program presented at the meeting of the St. Elmo Unit of Home and Community Education held the afternoon of June 26 in the Phillips Building. Hostesses were Noma Moore and Karen Wegscheid.
Before the tea refreshments, Wegscheid gave the history of afternoon teas. Catherine of Brogaza, a Portuguese, married Charles II in 1862 and became England’s first tea drinking queen. Wegscheid also told of the different tea times – low tea is when light refreshments are served from a low table, such as a coffee table, and high teas means an evening meal from a high meal table.
Refreshments the hostesses made and served were the following: Teas-rose tea, jasmine green tea and Rooibos safari spice tea, all from pretty tea pots; tiny tea sandwiches-cucumber, beef salad, salmon on pumpernickel, chicken salad; lime tarts, chocolate covered strawberries, blackberry muffins and brownies.
Chairman Wegscheid opened the meeting with all giving the pledge of allegiance.
