Additional CAPS Info
In last week’s CAPS information the following needed to be added: Other donations came from organizations and individuals.
Friendly Neighbors
Present for the Friendly Neighbors Aug. 4 meeting at noon at Mary Ann’s Restaurant were Bob and Joanne Owen and R. W. and Mary Smith of St. Elmo, Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown and Cora Miley of Beecher City. They had no program.
The Tuesday, Sept. 1, meeting will be held at noon at Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
Wright’s Corner HCE
For the August activity, the Wright’s Corner Unit of Home and Community Education went to the Dairy Bar at Altamont for lunch on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
Members attending were Carol Austin, Kate Jennings, Amanda Miller, Irene Reed, Mary Smith, Una Tish and Helen Wright. Guests were R. W. Smith and Larry Reed.
Chairman Austin presided over a short business meeting. Collected was the shoe donation; each member was asked to donate 10-cents for each pair of shoes she owns to contribute to a project to help with the Associated Country Women of the World Mongolia Greenhouse Development.
The county HCE treasurer will send the money collected from the seven county units to the Illinois Association of Home and Community Education.
Wheatland HCE
The Wheatland Unit of Home and Community for the August special activity planned to attend the Effingham County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 6, but because of much rain the night before, they decided not to go.
The Sept. 3 meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Mary Ann’s Restaurant.
St. Elmo HCE July Activity
For the St. Elmo Home and Community Education special July activity, a date was set, but because of several conflicts, another date had to be chosen and none were available for July.
Several were able to go on Friday, Aug. 7, to Arthur: Karen Denning, Mary Jane Mattix (a new member), Noma Moore, Anna Jean Rhodes, and guests Sarah Beasley and 1-year old son Kamden.
Rhodes and Shelton drove – they went on I-57 to Arcola, then turned west to go to Arthur. They first went to Yoder’s Kitchen, a restaurant, bakery and gift shop.
When they arrived about 10:30 a.m., they looked around the gift shop. For lunch, they went through the buffet, which included dishes made-from-scratch by the Amish and Mennonites.
It is good they arrived early, because when they finished eating, the restaurant was packed and each had to wait in a long line to pay.
During lunch, a short business meeting was held.
Minutes of the June meeting were passed around and were approved. The University of Illinois Extension has sent letters to the St. Elmo HCE, thanking them for the Vicki Sinclair and Lucille Dycus memorials through the Fayette County Extension Foundation, $15 for each memorial.
For an Associated Country Women of the World Mongolia Greenhouse Development project, which seeks to improve the capacity of the female farmer with financial and training programs, the Illinois Association of Home and Community Education is helping with county donations of 10 cents for each pair of shoes a member owns.
The St. Elmo Unit collected $22 and that is being sent to the county HCE treasurer, who will send a check to the IAHCE for the total amount the seven units in the county contributed.
For the August special activity, the unit chose to go to the Waltrip Restaurant at Post Oak on Tuesday, Aug 25. They will meet at St. Mary’s Catholic Church parking lot to pool rides.
After lunch, they went into Arthur to visit several of the shops, including an antique place.
Shelton and the Beasleys came back to this area to go to the Effingham County Fair. Denning, Mattix, Moore and Rhodes went to Beachy’s, where many of the food items are packaged by the Amish and Mennonites.
After leaving Beachy’s, they returned home by way of Sullivan, Strasburg, Stewardson, Shumway and Beecher City.
