St. Elmo advances to championship game of holiday tournament

ST. ELMO — The Eagles advanced to the championship game of their own holiday tournament on Thursday by coming back in the second half of a 42-33 win against Beecher City.

Senior Ben Davis hit a 3-pointer with six seconds left in the third quarter, and junior Levi Maxey made another on the first possession of the fourth quarter to give St. Elmo a 29-22 lead.

The Eagles had trailed Beecher City, 20-14, at halftime.

Maxey led the team with 21 points and seven steals, while senior Connor Beasley had a team-high seven rebounds.

St. Elmo will play either Altamont or South Central in the title game at about 8 p.m. on Saturday. Beecher City will play that game's loser at bout 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

In the first game of the night, Brownstown beat Mulberry Grove, 86-54.

Senior Austin Hunter had 28 points and 15 rebounds for the Bombers, while senior Matt Sefton added 19 points to help Brownstown reach the consolation championship game, which will begin at about 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Mulberry Grove was led by seniors Jordan Miller and Derek Phillips, who scored 12 points.

The Bomber will face the winner of Friday night's Ramsey/Cowden-Herrick game on Saturday, and the Aces will face the loser of that game at 3:30 p.m.
