Sr. Legion set for Firecracker Classic

Vandalia’s Sr. Legion team will spend the next several days playing at the Mattoon Firecracker Classic.

Starting on Thursday, the 15-team tournament – which features teams from Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota – will be played through Sunday at three different locations in Mattoon.

Vandalia is in Pool A, which also features Mattoon, Shelby County, Rantoul and Funkhouser, Ind.

On Thursday, Vandalia plays Shelby County at Mattoon High School in the first game of the tournament. Shelby County won a previous matchup, 19-6.

On Friday, Post 95 takes on Funkhouser at 2:30 p.m. at MHS.

Vandalia’s double day is Saturday, when Post 95 battles Rantoul at 12:15 p.m. at MHS and Mattoon at 5:45 p.m. at Grimes Field in Peterson Park.

Winners of the three pools, along with the team with the next-best record, will play for the championship on Sunday, starting with 11 a.m. semifinals at Grimes Field.
